Discuss your Favourite Beer(s).

Review and discuss your favourite beers and breweries.

My beer preference varies widely by season and mood. Partially that's fueled by the fact that beer, unlike most other beverages, varies widely in taste based to the average pallet. Although I do enjoy wine, my pallet is definitely not refined enough to actually detect it's subtleties.

I'll write a proper review later, but to start I'll post Vancouver Island Brewery's tasting notes on Skyhopper Honey Brown, a favourite my fridge is often stocked with.

Like you said, it all depends on the time, place, mood, etc.. Which, I think is how it goes for most people.

Usually with, say dinner, I like to have a more tasty ale. I always like trying new random breweries, but my "default" is usually something from Granville Island Brewery.

If I'm just hanging out with some people on a hot summer day, it's usually chilled Corona.

Sticking with mostly local/canadian selections here...

My go-to if the bar has it on tap is the Surrey Central Red Racer India Pale Ale. I find the bittersweetness of IPA's refreshing but also with that big depth of flavour that you can slowly savour. Best of both worlds. If only we could get more readily access to Dogfish Head beers here I'd be in heaven.

For lagers, Czechvar (not local), OK Springs 1516, Sleeman 1516.

Wheat ales; Red Racer White Ale, Grasshopper, St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale, R&B Sun God (Mt. Pleasant!)

Ales; Tree Brewing Thirsty Beaver Ale (cheap but tasty!), Rogue Dead Guy Ale (from Portland, but expensive!), anything from Unibroue (La Fin Du Monde, Maudite, etc.), Driftwood Farmhand, R&B Raven Crea,

IPA: Red Racer, Fat Tug, R&B Hobgoblin

Stout: Backhand of God, Guinness, R&B Dark Star, St Ambroise Oatmeal.

Breweries in general: Dogfish Head (American), R&B (Vancouver), Central City (Surrey), Unibroue (Quebec), St. Ambroise (Quebec), Big Rock Brewery (Calgary), Rogue (Portland), Driftwood (Victoria)... And all the monasteries in Belgium that do trappist ales.

Thats all I can think of for now...

Anything Central City Brews is excellent in my experience.

St. Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale is my Bro's favourite beer; I enjoy it with a light meal on a summer day, but don't love it overall. I find the apricot flavour too dominant and slightly artificial, if the beer flavours were a little less subtle it would be greatly improved.

A bit off topic, but has anyone taken a course on beer? I drink the stuff, but I don't know as much as I would like to.

I'll just list a bunch of random beers that I have enjoyed in the past: Chimey Blue, Piraat, Gulden Draak, Tripel Karmeliet, Hoegaarden

Too many more that I can't remember! I usually take a picture of the bottle when I try something new.

Although there's definitely some beers I prefer not to drink such as your typical Canadian, Kokanee, Budweiser etc I will drink them if it's my only options. Overall I'm not one of those super picky guys though.

In terms of just my every day option I usually stick with Sleemans Honey Brown.

My pallet is very much the same when it comes to drinking wine and stuff though. Although I love wine I just don't have the right pallet to recognize all those things other people do. Maybe it's all the years of smoking I don't know.

All time favourite would have to be Asahi.
Simply smooth and great tasting for myself personally.

Usually go to Boston Pizza with my buddies and we'll do the Canadians

I ain't an expert but I do enjoy my beers. Bud, corona and all those shit beer were great when I was a kid but now, I really do appreciate the good old IPA. TONS of flavor and I don't mind it at all. I also enjoy the Wheat ales.

Sorry, stella and becks and all those other beers.. i much rather grab a granville island anytime (I will never turn down Granville island Winter ale and my awesome gf got me Chocolate Granville Island limited edition) That was just pure awesomeness.

Then again GUiness is great once in a blue moon.

Have you had Unibroue Ephemere and Ephemere Cassis? Soooo tasty. On the nose you get a huge hit of fresh Granny Smith Apple (or Black Currant for the Cassis), but when you drink it you only get a hint of the fruit essence but without the sweetness, so it's super refreshing and drinkable.

Flying Beaver had Ephemere Cassis on tap last summer. Regular Ephemere you can get in liquor stores.

Winter Ale is a very good beginner craft beer. A bit overpowering with the Vanilla, but definitely a good starter to get people more into stronger tasting beer; at least that's kind of how it was for me. I've tried the GI Chocolate and remembered it was quite good. Their limited edition beers are very good in general, I find. Had this a few weeks ago:

In an effort to drink less, I've started purchasing single tall boys. One of my new favorites is the Pacific Schwarzbock. It's got hints of chocolate and coffee, and weighs in at 8% ABV. It's only $2.50 at the local beer and wine store.
