Japanese Rice Brands Does anyone know what brands of Japanese rice are good? I'm looking for the ones similar to the ones Japanese Restaurants serve with their rice dishes...ie. Teriyaki Chicken, Lunch Box combos. Thanks! |
You're looking for the Short Gain rice (as compared to the long grain jasmine rice where you normally eat in chinese restaurants) There are different grades and producers. Most of it is grown in USA and some are products of Japan and Korea I usually buy the Kokoho Rose (best grade for that company) at TnT or China Rice World. For what the restaurants serve, i'm pretty sure they use the Kokoho Yellow (it's the cheapest in this line and has must bang for buck) If you want the ones that are from Japan & Korea your best bet is Fujiya or Hmart Another tip is how you prepare the rice: 1. How you wash and soak it 2. How much water you use 3. The rice cooker is VERY important too |

i use Kokoho Rose for japanese dishes, and Tamaki Gold for sushi |
if cost isnt an issue, id suggest tamaki gold. |
Tamaki Gold is pretty popular at Fujiya. Was on sale for $24 for 15lbs. Try Tamanishiki. Or Yume if you fancy your rice a bit shinier/glossy and fluffy. We soak/let the damp rice sit for a bit before cooking. |
Thanks for the input everyone! i think I will try Kokoho Rose |
Kokuho* Rose. I think sh0n might have got it a bit mixed up lol. Kokuho Rose is a MEDIUM grain rice as well. There's currently only one kind of rice at Fujiya that is imported from Japan. Last I saw, it was 33 bucks for 15lbs. |
