TIMING BELT
 

Hey Guys I've been a Lurker for a while. Lol! this will be my first post.

So, I've got a 1992 Civic. Technician A changed my timing belt.
When I'm rev-ing, I noticed that It's making this whining noise from the timing belt area. The next day, I took to Technician B to ask his opinion. He say that they tighten the belt too much.

The next morning, I took it back to Tech A, and he told me that it sounds normal to him. He also told me that it is making the whining sound because the timing belt is new and the noise will be gone once the timing belt stretches.

Would a too tight timing belt harm my motor? What's your take about this?

is there a warranty from Tech A? get it for atleast 1year.

I had my timing belt changed on a 95 eg from Kartec Auto on Main st. for $2xx and their tech over tightend the nut in the crankshaft pulley and it broke as i was driving. Had to re-tow to their place and got a sad excuse of "ware and tare". Ended up spending another $2xx (almost same as timing belt job from Honda). The tech who worked on the car was let go/quit (can't remember) a day or two before i brought my car in again. I had warranty on parts only :|

an over tight t-belt can cause's a whine. Odds are when tech A was tightening the bolt on the adjuster, he was giving the spring a little help or push. Should be easy enough for him to just loosen the bolt, turn the motor and retighten the bolt. Thats why its spring loaded. To give just enough tension required. Eventually the belt will wear and stretch and may stop the noise, but that may take a while.

I remember some of the late 90's civics had t-belts too tight from the factory causing a whine noise. Its a simple fix to re-adjust it

Was the tensioner replaced too? How many KM's on motor?

Yes it was replaced together with the water pump and belt.
it has been two week now since I got replaced.
The car is running good, but the whining noise is still there though.
Im still a lil bit worried if this would turn to a serious matter in the future?

I know a lot of people will put the belt on a little on the tight side with new so it doesnt start fluttering 2 years down the road.

I wouldnt be overly concerned, if the tech knew what he was doing im sure he did it on the "tight" within reason. Eventually the belt will stretch and the noise will go, when its time to replace it will turn into a loud fluttering/smacking noise lol. Id rather have a bit on the tight side than too loose.

Timing belts don't stretch, if it's a good quality belt. It'll whine till you replace the belt again. A little tight will whine and will not do any damage. It's just annoying to hear.
The tech should have installed the belt, rotated the engine by hand for a few revolutions and then torqured the tensioner down so it doesn't move. It should not whine. If the tech gave the tensioner a little push, the belt's a little too tight.

you should be fine but it shouldn't whine.
For me i would take it back to them to fix it. The whine would drive me crazy.

If its to tight then the tensioner pulley will fail prematurely. The belt wont stretch till its due to be replaced, otherwise they would have an auto tensioner and they dont.

What do you mean by it will fail prematurely?

as in the bearing in the tensioner will whine/whirr like no tomorrow.

Yes. It creates excessive load on the belt, tensioner, cam and crank bearings something will fail earlier then normal as a result.

Coz the technician's keep on telling me not to worry about it. That it will not harm my motor, so I havent got it adjusted yet.

You shouldnt have to live with substandard work practices unless thats what you payed for.
If you want another tech to look at it and adjust it properly since the original tech has little to no desire to take care of you come by my shop I will adjust it properly. Not for free but I wont rape you either

timing belt on hondas generally do hav a small whine but it shouldnt be noticeable its a very slight whine. but if u can hear this inside the car with the windows up then yes u should take it to tech b and get him to loosen it or put a new belt on
if its over tighten it will wear out faster

they say that so that u wont worry about it and then wen shit goes bad, u will go back to them and then get ur pockets raped

to much load on ur crank pulley will cause it to warp over time as the engine goes through hot and cold temp just like how ur brake rotors warp
