Veteran looking for employment. Hey guys, I am currently looking to move back down in the Vancouver area. I'm just wondering if anyone is looking for an extra employee so I have a job lined up for when I get there. I only require 2 weeks notice to move so that will give me time to pack and find a place to live! I am 26 years old, male, and physically fit. I have 4 years of military experience with Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry in Edmonton as a Corporal, served a tour of duty in Afghanistan, and now working part time with the B.C. Dragoons, plus I do online parts sales as well. The problem is that the army doesn't really give you any transferable skills to the civilian work place besides being a police officer, correctional officer, security, etc. Also, apparently the army won't pay for my schooling now since there has been budget cuts so I kinda got screwed over. My previous jobs were working at Culligan Water, Shaw Cable, Manteo Resort, freelance photographer, and at a performance car shop doing part sales. I would love to have a trade if someone was willing to teach me but I am open to all types of work. No minimum wage B.S, pyramid scams, outbound call centers, etc. My last job was 60k/year with full benefits so I am looking for something RESPECTABLE and realistic for the high cost of living there. I am also willing to start at a lower rate while being trained as long as I am guaranteed that I will be able to climb up in the company. I will be looking on Craigslist for employment also but I thought I would try here first. So, if anyone is looking for a dependable employee or knows of someone that is, please let me know.:concentrate: Thanks for reading. |

damn :rukidding: but they want you to kill and risk your life for them though anyway sorry to budge in here but that just outraged me, had to say something.... But hey I would like to give you a word of advice though.... DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME ON CRAIGS LIST. It's become ground zero for scammers and agencies, you will get nowhere on CL.. check out Job Bank, BC Jobs and the others like Workopolis and Monster, steer clear of CL by any means |
Craigslist is a great resource. The majority of positions I've held began as craigslist postings and they were by no means minimum wage, dead end type jobs. The majority of people I've hired were respondents to craigslist postings. I don't know where G-spec is getting the idea that CL is a waste of time, because my ample experience is to the complete contrary. |
about 5 years ago, CL here for Vancouver was great.... now for example well not just my experience, but simply put, one just needs to take a look at all the changes that CL operators are implementing to weed out scammers and all the negative attention it's received lately from all sides about the scammers infiltrating the website literally. I post a lot of sale stuff on CL and just in the last year alone, and from my memory there has been about 3 different identity confirmation tests that CL has rolled out, still has maybe put a small dent in the problem. My friends combined have sent out hundreds of resumes, qualified guys but only got a handful of callbacks let alone interviews. Just last month I was look for apartments on there, sent out about 20 emails, 10 of them came back and 9 were fucking scammers... and this was in the PROPERTY RENTAL LISTINGS for fcks sake.... it really surprised me that it's gotten that bad. I've been sipping Craigs List haterade almost full time since then |
^^ I posted room from rent on CL about 2 months ago and we gotten so many replys I really don't have the time to check them all. Is strange though becasue even last week I still got calls about it.... Like I am sorry is almost 2 months so yea is rented out lol. I know when I look at job postings there a lot of them are form Job agency which is just looking to collect your info........... Haven't bother with CL sales section yet..... But recently I find a really cheap room in Calgary (going there during stampede). For really cheap... Paid the depoist and the lady seems legit..... HopefullyI didn't get scam lol. |
Still looking.. |
FishTaco have you considered going through a Job club? I know that sounds horrifically lame but really what they do is help you with your job search, with your resume and networking and you'll have a case worker who will help you target jobs that fit your requirements. There is an entire sector of non profit groups that are dedicated to helping people transition careers and find jobs, unfortunately most people don't know much about them. RDK Career and Employment Services is usually the first point of contact if you have an office in your location, and they will refer you to the program or group that will best help with your needs. |
craigslist is a great place to look for a full time job or a part time job. |
Sorry, this won't be directly helpful to you FishTaco; if I were still in a position to hire people, I'd do my best to hook you up... The trick with CL is to evaluate the posting, because some are well worth responding to while others aren't worth the time. A reputable company should include the majority of the following details: the company name, a company specific email address, information on the company, remuneration offered or TBD, description of the skills potential candidates should possess. Reputable companies will include those specifics at the minimum, because they do not want to waste valuable time sorting though resumes of candidates not appropriate for the position. If the posting doesn't include those details, don't send them your resume filled with personal information. That should all be common knowledge, but maybe not to some of the younger RSers. |
I got my new job through a craigslist ad, and my new ocean view apartment. I'd say its done pretty well for me in the last 2 months. If you actually read the ads and use some common sense most of the scams will be pretty obvious. Someone tried to scam me on the apartment situation, but I decided not to send money via wire transfer to get the keys in the mail from england.:ahwow: What kind of job do YOU want? I'm sure you could find someone willing to apprentice you in a trade. Any constriction company with half a brain would hire a young able bodied ex military vet with hopes of advancement. |
PPCLI FTW!!! Anyhow have you looked into being a commissionaires officer? |

I have also found several GOOD professional jobs on CL that were not scams. On the flip side, I have hired people from CL ads too....I must add, that within 4 hours of posting a job on CL I got 67 resumes. I responded to 3. Hundreds of ppl apply for this stuff...maybe your friends don't stand out? Gridlock also does all his ads on there too and has great response. I love CL! |
