How good is a can of spray paint for body work? (bottom of car) I have some fiberglass sideskirts that I've hit with a speed bump. The skirt is ok but the paint is now all cracked in that spot. If I sand off just that area (about 3 inches by 2 inches) and spray it with spray can paint, how will it look? It's the bottom of the sideskirt so no one is going to stoop and look at it closely and the color is glossy black. I plan to mask off everything except that area. Then sand off all the cracked paint down to the fiberglass. Then spray paint. Just wondering if there will be a serious mismatch between the colors and/or the gloss. Do I need a can of clear too? The other thing I could do is to touch up the cracks with a brush and touchup paint. Not sure how well that'd look. I guess this is the one fortunate thing with black paint on a car, touchups would be hard to spot at a glance when it's that low on the car. |
It all comes down to prep and how much work you put into it. When we first opened up I painted a whole custom Yamaha Vstar with rattle can primer, paint and clear. Polished it up and it won third place in its class at the gas town bike show. My trigger finger was so sore for a week after lol. |
Ghetto! So I ran out of time (had to go somewhere today) and used a quick and dirty trick: Black shoe polish (the cream style, not the harder "waxy" style) to fill in the cracks. Took 10 seconds. Can't see the cracks in the paint anymore. :fullofwin: Am lucky my car is black. |
yeah, you're really lucky your car is black. any other colour, and you would have to spend so much time looking for the exact shade |
Hey, bring the car by once the shoe polish wears off and we can figure out a cost effective solution..... |
Thanks for the offer. I'm not working at the moment and so I have lots of time to try out some solutions, like sanding and rattle can spray bombing. ...if I blow it, I'll be coming by :) |
No problem .... let us know. thanks. |
