Any places to remove tint? So last time I went down to mt. baker, the border guards obviously assumed I was smuggling 100kilos of cocaine and tore my car to shit. In the process they scratched a bunch of tint off of my rear window, and tore it in a couple spots, assumably from the board edge. I know I can take it off my self with a steam cleaner, however I don't really feel like buying one, and would rather not deal with a tedious job if the cost doesn't warrant it. Has anyone taken there car anywhere recently and had it done, and would you be willing to share the cost? It would just be for the hatch and rear windows on a gti. Thanks. |
i've had success with using windex and a hair dryer. the ammonia in the windex helps take it off and the heat makes it easier. if you have some multipurpose solvent around, you can use that to clean any left over residue. fairly easy DIY to remove tint, i wouldn't pay someone to do it unless i were an absolute noob and uncomfortable with trying it out. |
n-motion will do it. rs sponsor |

For windows without defrosters you can spray the window with window cleaner, use a small blade and start a tear. Use your hands if you like to tear all the tint off. When all the tint is off you want to add a little more window cleaner, and use the blade to scrape off all the glue that was used for the tint. Scrape until your window is smooth and not sticky. For your back window assuming it is equipped with a defroster you don't wanna use a blade on the lines. You may use the blade to *ONLY* start the tear and rip away by hand. Then use steel wool to scrub off all the glue. Process may take up to 2-3 hours? My first time I did it for a E90 with rear doors and back window tint took me around 3 hours. Getting the tint off is the easy part, getting the glue off is the tough part. |
nixon @ street legal tint. :) in case you wanted to get re-tinted. |
Thanks guys. Looks like I'll just do my myself. I was feeling pretty lazy, but if something as simple as windex and a hair dryer works I guess spending money would be a waste. |
you can diy. it took me about an hour to do. |
at work all we did was use a heat gun lol take a corner out with it, and then use the heat gun + your hand to pull the film out and we did the whole film at once without tearing little pieces n stuff. easier to do it all at once but go slow so it doesnt rip |
Hair dryer and windex is the most cost effective. My only warning would to be VERRRRRYYYYY careful on the hatch window (assuming you have the defogger). |
When I removed the tint from my front side windows, I parked the car out in the sun for a while and then the tint just peeled right off. Took me about 5-10 minutes to remove both sides and there was no glue left on the glass. |
