Bike rack?

My wife wants to get a bike rack for her '08 Subaru Impreza sedan so we can take our bicycles when we go up to Whitler, etc. We're just casual bicyclists, so we would only use it maybe once/month max, most of the other time, we just bike around our neighbourhood.

Just wondering if anybody can recommend a decent bike rack for ~$150 or less? Do most of the quality bike racks require you install a hitch on the car first? Or are there any decent rear-mounted bik racks that don't require a hitch? Thanks!

There are different types:

1. Roof racks
2. Trunk mount
3. Hitch

Edit: Oops. Hit the reply button too early.

I don't know of any racks that you can get for < or ~$150 unfortunately. My only suggestion is to check out Rack Attack or used ones on the Subaru forums/Craigslist.

If you can compromise, perhaps fold the rear seats down and throw the bikes into the back?

If you don't mind the trunk mount style, Yakima makes a superjoe and kingjoe trunk mounted bike rack. From what I recall, they should be priced around your budget. The main difference between the two is that the kingjoe version has foldable arms so it can be easily stored.

Good luck!

Thanks for the link to rackattack. I'm going to look into the King Joe one, thanks! I've heard that trunk mount ones aren't quite as secure as hitch mount, but I don't have a hitch on the car and don't want to go through all the hassle since we don't use it that often

Definitely stop by a Rack Attack store. They're pretty knowledgeable and give good advice. I've purchased parts from them in the past and they were extremely helpful in providing service to my roof racks that were end-of-product life.
