Burke's like that too. Those contracts are good only for the short-term and it seems like Nashville and Florida will be the dumping ground for these contracts.

#Preds Weber offer sheet from #Flyers. 1st 4 yrs 1M salary+13M sb; yrs 5-6 4M sal+ 8Msb; yrs 7-10 6M sal; year 11 3M sal; last 3 yrs 1M sal
Preds have to match IMO, but the $56M in the first 4 years might be hard for the owners to agree to, some saying Nashville lost $6-7M last year.

Match it then trade him, you'll get more value that way, first rounders mean nothing to a franchise like Nashville

Its a signed offer, Preds have time to match.

Edit - beat me to it.

I agree with Hondaracer. Weber worth far more than draft picks and there are teams who don't mind those crazy contracts.

Only problem for Preds is that if you match an offer sheet, you cannot trade that player for 1 calendar year from the date you match. So Preds owners will have to payout $27mil in cash within the calendar year ($1mil in salary and two $13mil signing bonuses), that's a lot of cash for a team that lost ~$7mil last year.

They can hold onto him for a year then try to try to trade him but they would still be out $27mil. Apparently Nashville was in the middle of trade talks with a number of teams regarding Weber when Philly threw the offer sheet at Weber, so this totally fucks Nashville, rumor is Canucks was one of those teams.

This reminds me of the Scott Stevens offer sheet, Caps didn't match and received 5 1st round picks, with those they drafted Gonchar, Peake, Witt, Kharmalov and Halverson, totally not worth it.

Nashville didn't want to give Weber $7+ on a 3 year term last year and opted for team elected arbitration.

Weber was in contract talks with Nashville. By accepting this offer sheet from Philly, you have to think they were far apart in their negoitations. This is going to be awkward if Nashville matches. Obviously he wants out. Do they take the hit and trade him after one year? There are a lot of players in their last year of contracts for 2012-13, I wonder what they are thinking with these contracts and what they will get in the new CBA. I think these long contracts will be gone. I personally don't like them because I think it signals less trades for elite players.

As ridiculous as these contracts seem, I'd rather them get rid of no trade/movement clauses over restricting terms on contracts. Given this summer's signings, it was a fair deal/offer, I can't even consider it 'predatory'. A 1 year deal at $8M would be more predatory. I just find it ironic that the owners as a group want to get rid of these mega term front loaded contracts, and then the owners individually are also floating these mega term contracts out at the same time. It'll be interesting to see what happens 6-7 years down the line from now when the crap years of some of these contracts are going to have to get eaten up by somebody or we have a bunch of Wade Reddens and Sheldon Sourays buried in the minors.

I'm going to guess the Weber camp thinks these mega term deals as we know them are not going to be here with the new CBA, so may as well sign one now while he still can and guarantee some big $$ even if it means Pred's match and having to play for them for the rest of his career. If he really wants out in a year or two, he can just pull a Rick Nash and ask for a trade, seems there are no consequences with this course of action.

Is there any reason why they offered him a signing bonus instead of more money for regular salary?

the signing bonus is paid at the beginning of the year before the season starts. thats why within 1 calendar year weber will get 27 million. this is to scare off the preds from matching the offer. if it was a regular salary with a smaller bonus, the preds will more likely match and look for a trade after 1 year. least thats my understanding of it.

Signing Bonuses are typically guaranteed. If a lock out occurs, they still get their money.

I'm with UFO on this one. With the uncertainty of the next CBA, this may be the only time he can cash in BIG and LONG TERM. I don't think it had to do much with whether he wanted to leave or not. I'm sure he be happy playing in Nashville and in this case Philly as well. Can't help but think his Agent probably encouraged this.

Reason #1) If Preds decide to match, they must pay out a total of $27 million for Weber to play one season. Awful tough for a team with limited funds.

Reason #2) Current CBA negotiations have the owners fighting for salary rollbacks. However, bonuses are untouchable and therefore Weber is guaranteed that money.

I don't think he necessarily wanted to be traded. I think anyone would have signed that guaranteed money deal if it was thrown in front of them. Well maybe not anyone but 99 out of 100 players offered it would have signed it.

He's guarenteed that money and protected from salary rollbacks if the new CBA gets signed. Some of the blame rests with Nashville with their initial low ball offer to Weber. He's an elite dman and was going to get compensated accordingly.

Wasn't that just media speculation that with Manny's cap hit vs is drop in production, it was better to get rid of him?
