quick update.

recent fill up was with 94 from chevron with a bottle of fuel system cleaner (lucas i believe) and mileage got a lot better... 446km from 38-39L. hoping it stays relatively like that.
most of the mileage on that tank was from me driving up and down royal oak to the grandview superstore due to moving so i have a feeling the mileage might have been better if it werent for the moving

How often do you wash your car? There may be quite a bit of dirt/mud underneath the car that adds a bit of weight to it.

Also, engine wise, do a nice wipe down when you have time. The dust & oil collected on top of all the engine parts will induce more heat being trapped, which in turn would affect the overall performance of the engine. The cooler the engine is, the easier it is for it to run.

Clean air filter and proper fluid level will affect a bit too... there are many variables that could all contribute to a decreased mileage.

Fuel octane wise, just run what the factory says (87 is fine for most civics, unless yours is a Si then you need 91). Running higher octane fuel than factory recommendation will result in the engine running too rich, this will create more carbon deposit buildup and decrease engine performance as well.

Take it for a spin and rev the engine up on the highway like BallPeenHammer2 said.

dump one of those fuel injection cleaner in the fuel tank and see any improvement?

Wash it and see for yourself, any bit of extra mud/dirt underneath the car and inside the wheel wall means carrying weight.

Washing dirt off of one's car in order to increase MPG is satrting to nitpik, though. You'll be better served taking that sub box out of your trunk or cleaning the garbage out every time you get out.

Apart from avoiding regular maintenance, the biggest killer of fuel - particularly in short drives - is the drive itself. I've reached 800km in a single tank in my car before, driving nonstop on the highway. However, in my normal home to work and back trip (a grand total of 20km combined), it drops to under 500km per tank. Why? Because the drive is so short, the majority of the trip means the car is running in open loop. And all that means is that for most of my drive, my engine is dumping excess fuel into itself in order to warm up... only to hit peak operating temperature as I pull into the parking lot. It only spends two or three minutes in closed loop. The amount of time spent idling and pulling away from stop lights/signs also plays into your fuel consumption.

Just something to think about.

clean your intake/change filter possibly? could just be restricting air flow

hey guys - i'm having the same issue right now with my 08 mazda 3. the car just turned over to 50,000km :(

i currently have 1/2 tank of Shell gas bought from Bellingham and another 20L in a jerry can. It's 87. If I were to buy a injector cleaner bottle and dump it in with my remaining 20L , would that be ok?
How long should I wait to see if mileage improves? 1 week? 2 weeks? my next fill up will be on Nov 3rd (yes. I know exactly when my next fill up will be)

I will also check tire pressure today.

If the injector cleaner does not work, what is my next cheapest alternative?

Try all those things that have been mentioned above, some of them should do the trick. Correct me if I'm wrong but your car does not require premium, so if your using that it could be making things works. I've been experiencing a similiar problem with fuel consumption on my 92 civic. I use to get around 500km on a tank, now I'm at 350km. I have a few holes on my exhaust pipe so i believe that might be a culprit, but honestly, how much does the exhaust system affect gas mileage? I have a bad feel that there's a bigger problem at work. I noticed today that one of my injectors is wet on the outside while the rest aren't. If the exhaust replacement does not fix this issue I'll try that. Pcv as well I suppose, since the part is only 15$. How major would tire pressure be?
