i agree. this loophole will be exploited to no end unless china takes a hard stand. it wouldn't be hard for women to hide their pregnancy early on and when they do start showing, they could isolate themselves in their homes until well into the pregnancy.
sure, i don't like what happened to the woman, but she did break china's one child law. she couldn't be paid for that

I really have no say in what happens in a completely different culture, I simply don't know what it's like over there. But I will try to diagnose the situation in a NA's point of view.

I have a split personality when it comes to these issues;

I believe that every human being has the right to life.

I also believe that there are simply too many people on this planet at any given time.

I think that the killing of the baby was immoral, but I also believe that the family shouldn't have chosen to have another child if they knew that there could be a consequence such as this.

It's like knowing that you aren't supposed to run a red light, yet you do it on purpose anyway, and get t-boned. Your child dies in the accident, and you condemn the government for the law put in place.

I guess my final take is, it's extremely unfortunate that the baby was killed, but the family should have used common sense when it came to knowing what could happen.

Try buying a car that you know you can't afford, have it repo'd, and blame the bank for you not being able to pay the car off.

There seems to have some misunderstanding on the situation.

One-Child is a POLICY, and NOT LAW in China. To much part of the policy, it's against the constitution. But then again, there are many things in China that are against their constitution rights. As long as communist part is ok with it, then it's not a violation (just to show how screw up China is)

The government basically gave in due to the public outrage and bad image for communist party (supposedly, the communist party always think for its people.. :suspicious:)

Nevertheless, I think this would open the floodgate. See how people were jumping off the building at Foxconn? well, that's because Foxconn used to pay big bucks (relatively speaking) for those who jumped.

Too bad we won't be able to know much of it because media would most likely get censored.

This is true. This is only what happened to make the news, but I bet there are thousands of equally heartbreaking stories that get swept under the rug or go unreported.

Am I getting this right.... mom couldn't pay the tax-fine to have another baby so they killed it. $6000 fine and every thing is cool the baby would not have been murdered....just wow.......I was born at 7 months but that was back in '80 when survival even at that point wasn't certain now 5 month preemies survive. Its almost akin to carbon tax we pay it on gas they pay it on babies.

Abortion at 7 months is basically killing a fully developed baby. Its not like getting busted for speeding or caught with something, it is killing chemically a child you have developed for 7 months in your stomach. Imagine having something dead just come out of you at no fault of your own.

If it was a simple case of the law following through, there wouldn't be any repurcussions or apologies from China, a nation known for its terrible human rights infractions.

Fetus isn't human until its first breath, simples.

I remain mostly neutral on the human status of a fetus as both sides offer their valid points, but you are opening a huge can of worms by making a statement like this.

It's not murder if the state sanctions it.

morals and ethics shouldnt be stated or implied by the government or the laws they impose. Murder is murder a life is a life.
If they are so strict with their one child policy then they should sterilize mothers after one child and they should do so at the time of child birth.

Sterilizing the mother is actually even worse. Now they really cannot have babies (you *could* reverse it). So what happens if the policy is lifted, or what happens if the family had enough money and was able to immigrate to another country? So now if the mother wants babies again, she will have to look at an expensive surgical procedure to reverse whatever was done to her.

With that said, the mother violated the policy and paid the price. She should not have done so. She was just fortunate enough to have media coverage which turned the whole situation in her favor.

Hard fact is morals and ethics ARE enforced by government. The definition of murder is unlawful killing.
