What I do is ask myself if I would play the game if it was free. Generally the answer is no, but sometimes it's yes, so I pick it up for sale.

I rarely pay full price for a game anymore. Would rather wait a year for the "AAA" titles. Smaller games are often cheaper and shorter, which suits my lifestyle these days, and better anyway.
