Wireless Adapter

Moved my computer downstairs, need a wireless adapter.

Which one do you recommend?

ddr 07-15-2012 12:40 PM

i vote powerline ethernet

lilaznviper 07-15-2012 10:03 PM

powerline since it will give you a more stable and faster speeds

knight604 07-16-2012 12:08 AM

Ops, didnt make it clear, its for my desktop.

Usb card or pcie card

FerrariEnzo 07-16-2012 08:59 AM

with technology improving, there is not big difference with USB or PCIe... same with Powerline, since max speed is whatever your ISP gives you...

USB for faster deployment, just plug and play..
PCIe you need to open the case and move shit around if you dont have room while still making sure airflow is not disrupted.
Powerline is good, just plug it into the power outlet.. but its more costly..

Valet by Cisco AM10 Valet Connector Wireless N USB Adapter
My vote, $20 cant go wrong.. bought 1 for my nephews desktop... works and pretty good..

knight604 07-16-2012 10:48 AM

Edit: Nevermind , will probably be picking up the powerline ethernet.

Anyone have one in mind?

just picked this up a couple of weeks ago for my desktop and it works great for $20

I went to NCIX and the guy convinced me not to buy the Cisco Valet AM10.
He said the connection won't be as stable and as fast.
I got Shaw Extreme at home. Am I going to hit any limitations with the AM10?

icemiko 07-16-2012 12:44 PM

+1 on the Cisco AM10, I am picked one up a couple of weeks ago too.

knight604 07-16-2012 01:27 PM

I cant stand unstable connection so i need the next best thing towards wired.

connection has been stable for me for browsing and being on MSN.
i also played a guest pass with diablo 3 and it seemed OK.
experienced a little lag but I think that was the server not the connection.
for $20 it works for me

noTirl 07-16-2012 05:09 PM

I actually just starting using powerline since i moved last month. So far its been very solid. Havent noticed any DCs or lag period. I myself have the trendnet 401e2k model but i think the 200mbs one will do you fine. Also im getting the max speeds that telus gives. About 23~ with powerline and direct connection to modem.

knight604 07-16-2012 05:13 PM

Which one did you buy?

I'm on telus right now running the 15mbps.

the limitation is NOT with any adapters.... its with the ISP..
the guy at NCIX will wants to upsell you, dont they make commission or something???

Anyways, with Shaw Extreme, your prolly hitting cap at 15-20Mbps? Wireless N Adapters are rates max at 300Mbps but realistically about 54-100Mbps. Heck even Wireless G routers/adapters are more then enough to handle everyday task.

The Shaw Broadband 250 on the other hand is capped at 250Mbps but you wont get that speed as it also depends on other end server and other factors.

knight604 07-16-2012 10:57 PM

^ i think he means that usb are sometimes unstable, unreliable in terms of keeping a steady connection, because i have some garbage one right now and it is giving me the worst speeds.

My pages would load as if it was on dial up.

I dont mind speeding a little cash to have a smooth and steady connection, best thing to wired.

FerrariEnzo 07-17-2012 08:20 AM

depending on how far the wires need to go..

my nephew has no problem with the Cisco USB... he plays D3, BF3 on it...

he could also upgrade the antenna on the router/modem to boost the signal... they are usualy about $20 anyways..

but spending $120+ without taxes on powerlines (prolly cheaper if you pricematch or something), its a chunk of change that could be better spent on other things... maybe look on CL or something..

knight604 07-17-2012 08:44 AM

Ill buy both and test it out to determine how satisfied I am.

FerrariEnzo 07-17-2012 11:51 AM

make sure you dont buy form NCIX, they do have the re-stocking fee BS if you return within the allowed time

knight604 07-17-2012 10:04 PM

Yeah I thought my usb fault so I went to futureshop to buy the dlink dual band xtreme N and still getting a shitty connection.

Will going powerline next.

knight604 07-20-2012 07:50 PM

Okay so i bought the powerline from dlink , it is fucking amazing.

Getting wired speed ! never going back to wireless!

noTirl 07-21-2012 02:13 AM

niceee
i dont really understand the tech behind powerline but its great for the few people that i know that have it.

the data gets routed through the power cable (hench the name Powerline)
So you need the main device connected directly to the modem (via ethernet) and you plug it into the socket, then you get another one that plug anywhere in the house through the socket and this one (either wireless or wired) gets connected to you device.

So basically its like the wireless routers idea, one in your computer and one connected to the ISP modem but instead of transmitting through air, its through the house powerline
