Julyna Cervical Cancer Fundraising

Raise eyebrows and awareness for cervical cancer and HPV - News1130

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's called Julyna!

"Basically, what we are trying to do is raise awareness and funds for cervical cancer and HPV," says organizer Vanessa Willson, a registered nurse in Toronto.

Last year Julyna raised $60,000 through pledges and other activities, this year they hope for more.

"We're asking women to choose a style for their pubic hair and maintain it for the month of July for pledges, much like Movember but it's the female version," she explains.

July may not seem like the ideal month for the event, but Willson says it's not about growing it out.

"You can pick anything, you could do the Brazilian. Some people say they've had laser hair removal so they can't participate. We usually suggest something like 'vajazzling', henna or a semi-permanent tattoo," she explains. "We are just trying to inspire creativity and autonomy. Women can do any design they want."

And there are no shortage of styles -- the Afro, the Arrow, the Charlie Chaplin, the French, the Side Part, the David Suzuki or the Patchouli -- also known as the Rasta.

"I know a couple people, even on our committee, who have elaborate designs and the thing is you don't have to say what you're doing publicly. But I know a lot of women, amongst themselves, do like to talk about what they're doing," she laughs.

But it is for a serious cause. Willson calls cervical cancer the 'underdog cancer'.

"Unlike breast cancer, which gets a lot of publicity, or prostate cancer, it's one of the ones where women who come from marginalized populations are at higher risk of not getting checked because of cultural differences or an inability to get to the doctor to get checked regularly," she says.

Willson adds that the point was to start a light-hearted campaign to allow people to talk more openly about a serious illness.

"As long as women are talking about it and sharing whatever information they have about HPV and cervical cancer, it will help to spread awareness and help women to go get checked," she says.

And my favorite part of it :fullofwin:
