wow.. my bad. Is all the failing necessary?? I've been on this forum actually since 2001. I don't post often on here but am certainly not some noob that knows nothing about cars. The bodyshops I normally use won't do the job, so some suggestions would be appreciated. I don't want a rattle can job otherwise I would do it myself. Apologies for posting in the wrong forum, mods feel free to move this wherever |
Plastidip |
I've used that stuff before, not the finish desired. Needs to be high gloss/clearcoat properly painted. |
if you have a paint gun its easy.. just potentially time consuming depending on grill design. ghetto option a) Scuff down with scotch brite and rattle can, potentially can look decent if you take your time proper option b) Use 320 grit or scotch brite to knock the chrome down to the plastic, spray a few light coats of adhesion promoter then prime it a few times, base coat then clear coat. the chrome on those are usually super super thin so it should be fast to sand down. |
I had my benz one epoxy primed + painted before. looked great until rocks on the highway made it look like swiss cheese |
Depending on how big it is, you can use the old modeller's trick of dipping the grille in brake cleaner to strip the chrome coating. Then it's as simple as deactivating the brake cleaner with water, drying it off, and painting it. |

I didn't think about that. It is a complicated grill as it is mesh so sanding was def out of the question. |
Soak it in a large tub with some Original Pine Sol (enough to fully submerge the part). This will remove all of teh chrome and leave you with a bare plastic part. Then it should be easy enough to re-spray. I did the same with the chrome grille on my 2011 Ford Edge Ltd. Stripped it myself, then had Boyd re-spray for me. |
