Smashed my camera screen

Hey guys i saw the stickied thread on the top of this forum but it didnt really help.

This is the state of the camera right now :okay:

I went back to my dealer (Visions) and they told me they cant do anything, went to broadway camera and they told me to go to Camtex. Im not so sure about doing that as there are many many bad reviews of them online and i want a good repair not a half assed job.

Pretty much only options left is to ship it to ontario back to canon which is gonna cost like 70% of the camera's value......

Somebody tell me what to do please :okay:

BTW: Camera is a T2i that was bought less than a year ago so i dont think im gonna upgrade yet

Think of this as an opportunity to get a new camera.

Find a replacement screen and DIY. Is it just the glass or the lcd too? usually LCD replacements aren't too complicated.

LP700-4 07-29-2012 02:58 PM

The outer glass is completely smashed and the inner LCD has a fine crack aswell.

Canon EOS 550D Rebel T2i LCD Window outer Glass Screen Display +Tape adhesive | eBay
$10 for outer glass

Canon EOS 550D EOS Rebel T2i / EOS Kiss X4 REPLACEMENT LCD DISPLAY REPAIR PART | eBay

$40 for lcd.

If the fine lcd crack is tolerable, heres a turtorial for the outerscreen

Canon 5D Mark II / 50D Window / LCD Cover Replacement « The Insomnia Sessions

I also read, its about $210 to get it done at cannon.

LP700-4 07-29-2012 03:11 PM

How hard will it be to try to replace the LCD aswell? Hmmmm.

Is it covered by Warranty?
What about those guys who fix iphone/bb/android screens?

LP700-4 07-29-2012 05:11 PM

It still has factory 1 year and Visions 4 years warranty. Visions said they dont cover physical damage and i cant get a hold of canon until tommorow. Im expecting the same answer though :okay:

Senna4ever 07-29-2012 09:40 PM

Canon will not cover it, as it was not Canon's fault it broke.

You can try DIY, but if you screw up, then the repair bill may cost more in the long run than just sending it in to Canon. The one big downside is that you will be out of a camera for a few weeks.

Amuse 07-29-2012 10:51 PM

How did you smash it? Just dropped on the ground?

LP700-4 07-29-2012 10:57 PM

Dropped and with my luck landed on the edge of an office chair leg. Coulda walked away with no damage if it landed couple inches away. :okay:

Gonna call Canon tmw and see if I can catch a rep in a good mood or something. Or else I'm gonna just order the glass screen cover and leave the inner LCD for the time being.

Senna4ever 07-30-2012 12:05 AM

It was your (accidental) doing that damaged the screen. Why should Canon be responsible?

LP700-4 07-30-2012 02:55 PM

Called Canon today, they told me they dont cover physical damage but if im willing to ship it over to ontario and back out of my own pocket they will do the replacement free of charge. They told me 5-6 weeks turnaround.

Ended up going for an aftermarket replacement from Camtex, 95 bucks was a bit expensive but they did do 2 hour turnaround. Not bad.

So you just had to pay the shipping and they'll repair it for free? I say that's a pretty awesome deal.

Sky_High 07-30-2012 03:32 PM

^ Just curious, a) what would the shipping cost of that been like?

b) If it's a repair that's under warranty, does Canon normally cover the shipping?
Or do they only cover the return trip back to the customer?

Senna4ever 07-30-2012 03:32 PM

That was nice of Canon to offer you that! :)

Yup, awesome customer service by Canon its one of those awesome companies that go out of their way to make their customers happy. I would've accepted if i didnt need my camera for a month or two, but our family is going on vacation soon and i want to have it with me on the trip.
