had i known I was gonna get transfered to vernon.....i would have kept the subbie....my mistake i suppose :(

the main thing is I want a capable winter car that is practical but still fun to drive......which narrows the options down by quite a bit.
I would prefer a manual over auto if possible, and something with a bit of balls.

Ideally i want a Legacy GT Wagon Manual, Outback XT Manual, Forester XT Manual, hell i'd even consider a wrx wagon manual but the problem is all these cars are hard as hell to find, and more than the 10K budget that I gave myself.

then i'm looking at cars like the 2.5RS Sedan, or 2.5RS wagon, but again a manual one is going to be harder to find....but these also dont have the comfort amenities like leather heated seats that I would prefer. (I like leather cause I have a habit of spilling coffee on my seats...and leather is easier to clean than cloth)

I've also considered other "rare/unique" cars like the Subaru Baja, early 2000s Subaru Outback Sedan H6 3.0......but again super hard to find.

i guess being a car enthusiasts I want more than just a winter beater, I want a car that I look forward to driving even in the winter, instead of waiting for summer to come around again to bring out the Z4. But at the same time....I have a budget....somethings gotta give i guess......

I have also looked at Saabs too, like the ones that is basically a wrx with a saab badge...forgot the model name

2004+ Nissan Maxima, great in the snow, Blasts up the coq no problem, SHIT fuel economy though.

Since you had owned a Subaru before and it was satisfactory.. just stick with the brands you know... especially since AWD is their forte. If you want a manual.. look to import one.. they have more in the US than in Canada.

welcome to the Okanagan. I'm going to say get a pickup that has 4wd. Great for year round, hauling stuff.. who knows, maybe you'll get a boat to tow. :D

hows the reliability? repair cost? guessing since its a turbo motor i'm gonna need 91 fuel....correct?
Looking at the asking price, vs black book value, i'm pretty confident i can negotiate this car down into the 8xxx.xx range.

these are solid cars. it is not going to be a rugged as an XC70, but the AWD will definitely help with traction in bad weather conditions. The 2.5T is a solid engine unlike the previous T6 in it which had nothing but problems. They are quite comfy, and luxurious rides. They get up to speed pretty good too, so if it doesn't on a test drive it may have build up from lack of driving/oil changes. Volvo doesn't recommend premium fuel in their cars as they claim you can use regular fuel for marketing, but with a turbo motor, i always recommend premium fuel.

Civic wagon w/ RT-4WD. 5 speed manual tranny w/ super low 6 gear. ud be tearing through the snow with snow tires... good ground clearance, reliable and dirt cheap to run.

only problem is.. finding one. haha.

You're paying 9k for essentially a 11 year old VW, you're asking for a world of hurt. Given that model's reliability track record, and it's age the mileage doesn't matter as much.

Assuming it's immaculately maintained and it's mechanically sound, you're still going to have tons of electrical problems primarily due to it's age.

I would avoid it...the C5 A6 with the 4.2 V8 had issues with transmissions and a host of electrical demons that could bite you.

Honestly, if you are looking for a AWD German sedan that's somewhat in your price range, a 2003-2005 A4 is your best option. A Volvo isn't a bad option either for a European car, however, I find their parts a little more pricey. Very comfortable cars (S60-S80s).

I know you want a more exciting winter beater, but, the definition of "beater" is to drive a car and not really give 2 shits about what happens to it. Get a older Rav4 or CR-V. It can be used to haul stuff even in the summer...like a new exhaust for your Z4 :)

so between the C5 A6 vs the S80 T5..you would definitely suggest the S80? Even with the 2K price difference?

I know its still an older Audi, but its a 03 as oppose to the 01 4.2 A6, and has under 100xxxkm......
got a friend thats checking out the S80 for me this weekend, and i might even look at an older 4 runner too.

I would avoid all audi's prior to 2002..
This includes the B5/C5, and the first MY for the B6 A4

They are a decade old, and the soft-touch interiors would not wear well. Also, the creaks/rattles will make you go insane. The newer 1.8T engines are solid, but the quattro requires additional maintenance. Avoid the tiptronic/CVT at all costs. Like all cars, get one with all the service records. 1.8T are prone to sludging if the incorrect oil is used (duh), and the quattro drivetrain needs to be serviced on time (duh x 2). Avoid the B7 2.0T since it uses the older FSI engine.

I would also avoid the X-drive E46. The carbon driveshaft will murder your wallet.

we tried negotiating on price, he is unwilling to go below $13500.....is that price reasonable for a RL that has 180K+ milages? but being a honda engine, the car should last another 150K right?

also looking a a couple of RX330 and FX35 (even 1 FX45), but those are all in the 15-17K range....while I can still "afford it" its more than what I want to pay....

so i guess my question is, hows the Acura RL for winter driving/high way cruising? and is $13500 a fair price? or is it too high still?
