Upgrade Path: T1i to ??? Hello all - I haven't been on this sub-forum FOR A WHILE! Anyways with a big bonus and a new career, I plan on upgrading my T1i to something more modern. Right now I have looked at the 60D and the T4i... with both being quite attractive because of the articulating screen and the price point. There is really nothing wrong with my T1i, I still use it at least once a week and it has served me very well.... but you know, sometimes you just get that itch for an upgrade to the latest and greatest shiny toy. Give me some pointers please all you gurus! |
Whats your price range? If you wanna stay with Canon then aim for the 7D. Its very well worth the money and keeps its value in the long run. Plus its an exceptional DX Camera. The 60D is very similar to the T3i in regards to picture quality but the T3i is alot cheaper so thats something to consider. If you go with Nikon then look into the D90($500 on craigslist) or the D7000. If you could wait abit the D600 Full Frame will come out sometime this year and it will be quite affordable compared to other full frames. Hope this helps :) |
^ Whoops sorry forgot to post a price range. Yes I plan on sticking with Canon - I've got quite a few lenses and a flash now and don't want to have to flip over to a new system while I'm in Australia. As for Price Range - Sub 1000 so the 7D is pretty much out of my reach Thanks! |
I think I would choose the T4i over the 60D. |
If your camera runs fine...maybe use that extra money on a new lens instead? |
T4i kit with the new 18-135mm IS STM lens. I think the 60D and 7D are getting a bit long in the tooth, although the new firmware for the 7D does improve it quite a bit. |
to be honest unless you are really after the videography function of the T4i/60D, both won't make much difference to the quality of photos you shoot. like other said, if you don't plan to budget your next upgrade at least toward the 7D, then a better investment would be toward new glass like the 24-70 f2.8 or 17-55 f2.8. |
i still love my 550d / t2i :) Honestly i think much of the t3i + t4i upgrades and additions are all just gimmicks aimed towards people more focused on video rather than photographhy although i like the digic 5 and the new cross type AF points though, i don't think it merits an upgrade from your 500d |

Not sure if OP ever figured this out, but buy an used 5D Mark II. It will be a very significant upgrade. I just sold mine used in perfect condition for $1550. They go for around 1600 usually. I'd say 7D, but the price difference in my eyes isn't very large and you'll definitely find the full-frame sensor on the 5D II much more pleasing. |

I'm with the others though. I'd upgrade lenses over the body. 7D is as far as you can go if you've got yourself a bunch of EF-S lenses. |

And by selling the t1i, could afford an used 5D2. If he/she got the 7D then I can picture OP eventually wanting a 5D2. |
Used 7D's can be had for under $1,000 if you're patient enough. If you don't care for video, T3i is a screaming bargain. Otherwise, a T4i uses the newest Digic5 processor, and has very good highISO performance for a Rebel. |
