Another pretty infographic has been dreamed up and compiled by Rogers. This is part of an ongoing project called the “Rogers Innovation Report.” This time around they’re focussing in on the youth, parents and bridging the generation gap – which is perfect timing for the back-to-school period. The study was done in conjunction with Vision Critical and surveyed “509 Canadians aged 18 to 24 and 511 Canadian parents of 18 to 24 year olds that subscribe to internet or have a data plan with their cell phone.” The main question circled around finding out how youth and parents use mobile technology to keep connected. Here’s a few of the key findings:

- 40% of those aged between 18-24 are using technology to stay close with their parents
- 43% of “connected parents” are using technology to stay close with their children
- 29% of parents say tech allows them to be closer to their children than they were with their parents
- 29% of Canadian parents consider themselves to be tech savvy
- 43% of Canadian parents turn to their kids for help on how to get the most out of their devices
- 52% of Canadian parents surveyed consider their kids to be tech savvier than they are
- Texting is the preferred smartphone and tablet activity (94% for parents, 82% for youth)
- 52% of youth are friends with their parents on Facebook
- 79% of youth download apps on their smartphone/tablet
- 56% of parents download apps on their smartphone/tablet
- Both youth and parents have close to 14 apps on average on their devices

You’d expect the texting stats to be high. According to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) Canadians sent a total of 78 billion text messages in 2011, which represents a 1-year increase of 27.7%.
Pretty interesting to see statistics like this. I personally wouldn't have guessed that PARENTS uses their smartphone to the same extent as youths. My parents and most parents that I know who has a smartphone uses it only to make calls. (rather disappointing)

Also I expected this to be higher: 43% of Canadian parents turn to their kids for help on how to get the most out of their devices.

This can't be right......52% of youth are friends with their parents on Facebook?....I'd be surprised if 25% of youth's parents HAD facebook....

It's probably just a way for them to get more parents to buy data plans, smartphones, etc.

had my number when I was 12... used my dad's name and it's still under his name 8 years later :lawl:

If they use data from their customer database, their data is gonna be so askew.

Doesn't surprise me. It's not like cell phones and texting is "new."

Statistics could mean that of the parents who actually do have Facebook, 52% of them are friends with the children. Not necessarily the other way around.
