I do respect that the guy actually drives the damn car. It's meant to be driven and enjoyed, not hidden in a garage forever.

Fair enough.
But when the rain hits while driving a car that is notorious for being difficult to drive in the dry, then it's not the right time to put your foot into it.

I have a 400+ whp muscle car and an STi with big turbo and similar specs, and I guarantee that I drive them with respect if it's raining. Especially the muscle car with high torque and RWD. This guy is an "aficionado", not a driver. Sometimes they're the most dangerous squids out there.

So I know there have been a lot of speculations on what caused this accident. Anyone know what REALLY happened? I just heard a different story of what might have happened..

Apparently the owner is a neurosurgeon , and he was drunk yesterday. He was smart enough not to drive his car, so he called his sister-in-law to come pick up the car and drive it off Van Dusen. Sister-in-law never drove one of these, so making a left on Oak, she punched it a little hard, road was damp, F40 lost control, hit a pole, and we know the rest.

Anyone else heard this version? My source is somewhat reliable, but who knows, I wasn't there when it happened!

Either way, that car was one of the few cars that caught my attention in there on Saturday. It is my ultimate dream car after all. Sad to see this happened! Hope it can be restored back to its original shape.

Ronald

it wasnt raining all day, it just started a few hours before the accident. i dont think the guy planned to drive in the rain, but when you gotta go to a car show and spent the whole week prepping the car, what are you supposed to do, not take it to the show because the forecast says it might rain later? the whole week was dry and sunny.

I get the provenance of the F40, but it's unbelievable how so many people are so emotionally attached to a car they don't own and that they'd flame this guy like he actually crashed THEIR car.

Everything at this point is hear say. Wait for the real story maybe...

Also he had to drop the car off mid day Friday an let it stay there until Sunday evening. On Friday I'm sure the weekend forecast was fine.

+1, there are SO many conflicting stories at the moment of who's car it was, who was the driver, even road conditions it's unfair to really point the finger at anybody.

Its all speculation right now. Instead of calling the driver an idiot, let's just say he either ran over a banana peel, or hit with a red shell

As I said in the other post, this is what went down

As vehicles were doing the roll out, the said owner was the driver. He was doing burn outs and donuts on the grass, given the calibre of cars in the general vicinity and the fact that your in van duesan garden that's pretty douchy behavior

So after you roll out, you exit onto 37th, he went east and then north on oak, the tried to get around car on oak and lost it where is spun into a tree or pole. He basically lost it going down a straight road at 80km...lol.. In terms of road conditions it was damp as it started to drizzle at that point, it was around 6 ish so it wasn't dark but it was cloudy, road conditions weren't great but not horrible. He was deffinatley younger like late 30s east Indian. They served alcohol at this event.... So u know....

At the worst he was hammed, at best he can't drive in a straight line.

Are you telling me that if you saw a mint 68' Cobra Jet smashed after ogling it at a show, that you wouldn't be upset?

Are you dead inside, or just really, really high?

There are no accidents, only collisions.
That said, I feel confident pointing a finger at the driver in a single vehicle collision. There are very few excuses that could ever justify him ripping this thing into a pole on a public road.

The key with these older cars is the proper tires. Rubber hardens and becomes extremely slippery after 5 years regardless of the mileage.

Obviously I would think it sucks, but I wouldn't be pissed off AT the guy.
It's not like I can afford a mint original cobra jet anyways, so it really doesn't affect me in the grand scheme of things. Actually everyone else who owns one would be loving the guy, because the value of theirs just went up.

I'm not sure why I can't have that opinion without being high.

Lol, that guy doesn't look like no neurosurgeon to me. I remember spotting this car in YT and the owner looked persian.

Lots of people seem to think that the second rain touches the ground, supercars explode. Yeah the car is fast, and raw, but its not like you couldn't possibly drive it, especially if its your car, and you are familiar with it. Single vehicle accidents are driver error, unless he was driving a "prius with a stuck accelerator" I feel no sympathy for the guy, but I'm also not going to be part of a witch hunt either. It doesn't change my daily life.

Maybe i'm the only one here who thinks this, but if I had a classic car like that, I can't say I'd ever have the desire to want to drive it in traffic. I'd pay for the track days and have fun at my own expense. But Oak Street in the rain??? Forget it.

You're fortunate enough to own a piece of automobile history. It's valued at close to $1M (I think) and only going up in value. There's no way I'd ever risk taking something like that into traffic. Not because of driver ability, but more because you never know what can happen. Sure, put it on display and let others enjoy seeing it. But that's what flat decks are for.

At the end of the day, who cares who's fault the accident was. You could be sitting at a light and get rear ended. Your car is still destroyed and you're left with a huge loss.

Got this from a pretty reliable source. "I spoke with the owner, he wasn't driving it. No one was injured, single car accident. Light rain, slick tires, and inexperienced driver played a major role"

I watched the car leave the show with a younger male driving the car. The guy in the photo above was in the passenger seat.

^flat bed it everywhere?

If you are that paranoid that your appreciating-valued car is going to get wrecked...just keep it purely on display then...what's to say it won't get totaled at the track...may be you can argue it died while performing it's best

^I lol'd

Keep in mind this happened AFTER the show. It didn't start raining till around like 3:30pm and the weather was really nice on Friday and Saturday. Glad the owner and passenger are okay. A heartbreak nonetheless, one of my favorite cars of all time.

A Ferrari F40 is a production engineered machine, just an assembly of infinitely replaceable components. Once the F40 is repaired it will no longer be 'original', but a very small percentage of cars hold that title indefinitely, and usually only because they're tucked away in a garage unappreciated. I don't see the accident as a great loss, if anything, a character building scar for the owner and car.

A life was not lost, nor was an irreplaceable creation; I don't see why anyone would be upset.

Just from an investment stand point I would be pretty choked because the owner will most likely take a hit if the car is written off. And I wouldn't want to keep the car and have it repaired because of the hit you'll take when the car is considered a "rebuilt". It's a shitty deal anyway you slice it.
