many new cars (08 and up) don't even need to idle before driving off unless we're in the freezing winter of below 0.

in the winter time i get 60 - 100km less than i get in the summer.

fliptuner 09-15-2012 02:31 PM

Lol, what, you think it's fine to start your car and leave right away? hahaha. Oil still needs to circulate and get to a minimum temperature before a load gets put on it. Can you do without warmup? Of course. Is it any good for the longevity of the engine? Hell, no.

TypeRNammer 09-15-2012 02:33 PM

Is your car lowered?

If yes did you follow it up with an alignment?

If not then that's your problem with the fuel economy.

I would do an alignment as soon as possible.

Then expect to gain about 40km to 80km of your fuel economy back.

electronic fuel injection bro.

in the summer time, idling is almost useless. it makes no difference but waste gas. i let my car sit for like 15 seconds before i start to go. get comfortable, put on seat belt, set my phone on the holder, etc etc.

in the winter time, i let my car sit for about 1 min. you can't warm up the engine to the operating temperature just by idling. you'll have to sit there for at least 15 - 20 min to get it warmed up (start to see the temperature needle move).

GabAlmighty 09-15-2012 06:16 PM

DO you have a turbo?

Starting and driving off is different from starting and idling, while you plug your phone in and put your seatbelt on.

Like I said, it's about oil circulation and minimum temp., bro.

my uncle who is a 60yo old school mechanic basiclly told me that i could idle for a few min, then drive off, but try to stay below 40kph for awhile ie dont stress engine, should be ok..

For my car, 280-320kms/ per tank of gas. :drunk:
peter, just get done the alignment. Don't you run another set of wider or bigger wheels than before?

Not to say bad things about your uncle, but people who have been in any industry for a very long time tend to stick to what they know, and while it may have been completely valid 10~30 years ago, a lot has changed since then.

If he has been keeping up, then good on him and he's an excellent person to turn to for advice; On the other hand, a lot of old timers (again, no offense meant) tend to say "I've been doing this for the past xx years, and I'm not going to listen to anything anybody says to the contrary."

Well just do one anyways and stick with it for a year.

Make sure you bring it to a good place too.

I cheaped out on an alignment once, it was a bad idea, my fuel economy dipped below the 400km mark.

After I brought it into a proper shop, my fuel economy went back to about 450km ish.

murd0c 09-16-2012 12:37 AM

I get 300km to a 70L tank. Now that's fricken sucks. I have a 97 4runner with 5"s of lift and 33's on steel rims tho lol

If you think it's off, get it done now. Good winter tires are soft as shit and if your alignment's off it'll wear through them pretty fast.

Oil circulates seconds after you start your car. As for minimum temp, your car will reach that temp faster just by driving at 1k rpm or 20 - 30 km/hr.

i get about 450km in the summer on 70L and about 400km in the winter and i consider that pretty bad.

you're vehicle should have a 13.2g/ 50l tank.
I had an 08 civic lx-sr (manual) and i would average around 600km per tank. 3/4 city driving.

I upgraded to a 11 civic si (manual) and average around 525km per tank. 3/4 city driving.

I highly doubt the auto trans. would fluctuate that much! I would maybe go to your local dealer and have them check it out. Your outside of your bumper to bumper warranty now but maybe they'll try and help you out. Worth trying.

OP- ecomodder.com is a good site

also stop measuring km vs bars of gas

fill up your tank everytime and reset the trip meter (also verify its working properly). Its the only repeatable way.

I record mine every time I fill up on my phone. Use L/100km as many people confuse mpg because there are 2 units of gallons.

Once you record then you can try changes and verify them.
I've currently down to 6.3l/100km from 7l/100km in a 4 door 4x4 suv that weighs 600lbs more than an 09 civic. I used the same driving patterns just modified parts.

racerman88 09-17-2012 05:08 PM

worse case, you can try running some seafoam through your gas tank to clean it out
