yay!

one day star trek and star wars will become real...hope i live long enough to see all the scientific breakthroughs.

but..MT Keshe is releasing free energy on 9/21 :okay:

since life expectancy is expected to dramatically increase during our life times (like easily live over 100+ no problem), i expect to see many awesome new forms of technologies integrate into our lives.

fusion power
advanced AI
cybernetics
simulated realities
the list goes on.

sadly we wont see intergalactic space travel, that's probably still several hundred years away... :(

Even more sadly than intergalactic space travel still being several hundred years away...

I doubt we'll live to see the end of hunger, disease, poverty, materialism, racism, sexism, homophobia, armed conflict, unsustainable population growth, exploitation of the planets resources and so many other banes that plague life on our humble little planet. Humanity has taken many steps forward in technology and science, but is still far from grasping the characteristics that are cited as evidence that we are 'special,' 'unique,' monkeys.

I look forward to the fulfillment of all aspects of Gene Roddenberry's predictions on the advancement of humanity, but the technological parts are secondary.

Still, cool story :)

those things will go away with time.

in the long term of things all those things you list will be irrelevant.

hunger will be eliminated through technology
so will disease (especially if one gives up their organic body).

materialism probably take longer. but i can see that disappearing too. it wont be the matter of materialism. but power and control. if we have the technology to give everyone what they want. materialism is nothing. but people will always want control over other people. over territory. etc.

racism, sexism, homophobia, will all be gone when the physical body doesnt matter any more. heavy cybornetics. transhumans. posthumans. very long term things.

armed conflict... lol i believe that will never go away. as long as 1 party disagrees, whether it be human or not, there will be some form of war.

if its not armed, it's economic war. its always some type of war.

technology comes first, we change with technology. advancement of humanity relies on advancement of technology. the realisation of what these technologies can accomplish. changes.

fusion alone could solve many of those listed problems.. or at least get us a bit closer to solving them.

cybernetic bodies...
WE ARE THE BORG.

I kid you not - that shit will be true one day

A later simulation, published last January in PRL by Slutz and Roger Vesey, showed that a more powerful accelerator generating 60 million amperes or more could reach “high-gain” fusion conditions, where the fusion energy released greatly exceeds (by more than 1,000 times) the energy supplied to the fuel.

you guys are all forgetting one thing that will make all that not happen in our lifetimes,

religion

Culverin 09-20-2012 07:24 AM

I am eagerly awaiting the singularity.
And I'm morbidly curious enough about AI pondering the question whether humanity is worth keeping around or whether we should be eliminated like weeds.

I've been seeing a lot of connections where spirituality and science support each other.

It's too bad the prominent religions are so light on truth & love, and so fucking heavy on BS and dogma.

I'm sure the actions of the AI will be a reflection of who created it, and so on as the new AIs create their own more advanced AIs.

(we are so fucked)

mostly from astronomers and astrophysicists i believe from the little bit of reading i've done on it.

regarding A.I. ... skynet or brainiac...we're all in trouble once they become self-aware...

nah, religion is already on the decline. they estimate in the near future (i forgot how many years, like 50 or 100 years), only 20% of the world will be religious. it's about 80% right now. so it will reverse. and dwindle.
