Sam the Record Man RIP

Most probably don't care or don't know about SAM the record man stores
but they were a great place to go to as a kid and I was sad to see the stores close

TORONTO, ON (NEWS1130) - Sam Sniderman, best known as the co-founder of Sam the Record Man store has died.

In 1937, Sniderman partnered with his brother Sid and opened a small record store in Toronto. Together they built a chain of Sam the Record Man stores that opened across the country.

A major promoter of Canadian music, Sniderman received the Order of Canada in 1976. He was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997.

He opened his flagship store on Toronto's Yonge Street in 1959. The iconic store with its huge flashing neon record signs closed in 2007 -- seven years after he retired.

Surrounded by loved ones, Sniderman passed away in his sleep Sunday night at the age of 92.

Oh man I used to shoplift from his stores all the time :okay:

hahahaha, oh man you're horrible!
:lol

Srsly though, times have changed. Remember when A&B Sound killed all the other record stores with $13 cd's while Sam and HMV charged $17.99? Looking back we would have never seen the change to MP3 coming. My first MP3 player was an RCA Lyra back in 99' and that shit was high tech.

Old Sam lived to see it all happen, and I bet he hated every minute of it near the end.

Sad he had to watch his empire fall first.

I remember listening to new cd's/tapes at Sam's, then buying them at A&B or drving down to Tower Records and get the singles w/ remixes.

originalhypa 09-24-2012 10:04 AM

Oh wow, remember those listening stations?
You had to specially request if the cd you wanted to hear was abstract because they only had the top 10 or something preloaded. The staff had to manually put it into the cd player, and keep the original plastic so they could resell it. You'd always get snooty service if you didn't want it either.

:lol

Why was shit so hard back then?

Matsuda 09-24-2012 10:04 AM

^Yep I used to do that too

Me too, I remember going to his store in downtown.

RIP.

Them and Music World sure closed down quick once HMV took over. Kinda crazy these days you don't even need stores like that.

sonick 09-24-2012 04:22 PM

A&B sound was great :okay:
