spend as much as you can with them. my dog passed away due to cancer about 1.5 years ago and the day he was on steroids to keep him up, moving around and to feed, our family knew time was near.

i would never wish the pain that families go through after their beloved pet passes away.

Love my dog!
Miss my old dog every day though. Poor girl passed away due to old age.. Lived a full 16 years. She had a rough past and my family and i were lucky to have had been chosen to take care of her while her original owners settled in hong kong. We were supposed to send her over but the mother decided she didnt want the dog anymore and told us to keep it. Unfortunately she did not tell her children the same story... But we were happy to have welcomed her to our home. Whenever she heard u cry she would run right to u and lick away ur tears and cuddle up next to you all day if she could.
Still remember the day that she passed. My dad found her lying on the ground and not breathing.. My dad administered CPR and called the spca. They told him that she had passed and for him to bring her over to them. I was in grade 10 during this time and my dad had a difficult time breaking the news to me. I miss her everyday but i am very happy to have my current dog in my life right now. Love him to bits!!

Only had our dog for 2 months now but absolutely love him.
I remember one time I was tickling my gf she was like "BAILEY come help meeee"
and he ran over and went on two feet like he was begging for a treat.

Gf was telling me that whenever she showers, he waits outside lying down and once she finishes and opens the door, he has this huge smile on his face and his tail wags.

Same here.

Our yorkie always greets me at the door with these howls, like saying helloooooo welcome home, and then stands up with her front paws pressing on my leg. Has the biggest smile and eyes are lit. Funny thing is that particular howl is meant for me... She doesnt do that to my fiance as much lol...

It must be because I spoil her so much hahah

I wasn't expecting such depressing comments based on the topic title, and it seems like every post is a dog post, so I'll contribute by adding a cat post.

"My first pet" was a cat, and technically she wasn't really "my pet" because she had been in the family before I was even born. She was more like a furry sibling who grew up together with me instead. Half of my baby pictures were taken together with my cat, and as far back as my memory goes, she's always been there. When I started attending Elementary School, she'd be my alarm clock and wake me up every morning, and she'd always be there to greet me when I got home from school. She had a bit of a temper, and would flip out and open all the drawers and closets in the house if she was left alone for too long.

I had some family problems back in High School, and my cat always seemed to know when I'm feeling down and would try to cheer me up. I had planned to even take my cat to take my graduation photos (as crazy as it sounds) but she died of a kidney failure when I was in 12th grade. The doctors suggested that putting her down would be the best option, but I couldn't bring myself to do it so they just administered some painkillers instead to ease her pain. By the last few nights she was really weak and could barely drink or walk but she'd still try to crawl and follow me around, and when she saw me she would still greet me with a very weak "meow". It's been many years now but the memories of her final moments are still very vivid to me. It took me quite a while to finally got over the lost of her and to be able to look at old photos of her without getting my eyes all watery.

It's a shame that humans and cats/dogs don't share the same lifespan.

I've had my dog since he was 8 weeks old and going through all the training phases and staying patient with him was hard....but I always think how many times he's patiently waiting for me for anything. He's like velco to me, if I go to the bathroom to shower, he naps on the bathmat. Even after a long day after work and I don't really feel like doing much, man, walking with him is the best thing.

When I used to live in Richmond near the airport, during the spring-summer months, I would take him to Mcdonald beach near YVR every morning. You want to see pure joy, the look on his face while he runs up and down the sand by the water...how can you not smile.

We just had a child not too long ago and the changes in him are so profound. He used to want to be the centre of attention all the time, but now, he understands that the baby needs taking care of. It's cool to see that when the baby starts to cry after waking up, he'll run over to his bassinet to see what's up. When we change the baby's diaper, he always stops what he's doing and runs to us to "help" out...even in the middle of the night.

Short version, dogs are awesome and give us their unconditional love. They deserve it in return.

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.

Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Love, God

the most love i had for a dog wasnt even my own but belonged to my neighbor.

misty, the little pom greeted me every day to and from school for 13 years when i was a kid. she sat outside unattended on the front lawn on her large unfenced corner lot and never wandered off.

one summer in 5th grade she even saved my life by running in front of my bike and cutting me off before i reached the alley. luckily she did because a car flew up the alley a few seconds after without stopping. how did she know?

then as i grew older and was half done HS, i saw her less and less until i noticed she wasnt around anymore

i love my cats and dogs but for some reason i loved misty.. the lovable neighborhood dog the most

Sorry to hear man. Keep your head up and be happy for the fact she had you to love her for her whole life. So many dogs out there never get that.

Groucho usually kicks it on the bed when I shower, but when I'm done, he'll come running over and stand up against the side of the tub, wait for me to hang my toes over, and then lick the water off my toes.

Weird, weird dog.
