Help needed, car dies while driving
 

According to my mom, her car randomly crapped out while on the road yesterday. I didn't get a chance yet to ask if it cut out suddenly or if it started bogging then died, but just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. After she had pulled over and waited a couple minutes, it started up fine again. She had said a few days ago that it seemed like the car had trouble starting where she would have to crank it a few times before it would fire up. Experienced a similar issue this morning when I gave the car a look. Car would crank but wouldn't start on the first try but no problems the second time. Runs great otherwise, nothing out of the ordinary.

Car is a 93 Camry 4cyl with 274k on it.

Checked the alternator and fuse to make sure it's charging the battery and found no fault. Dizzy and wires still appear to be fine, though they were replaced last year.

ill agree on fuel related issue.

Did you bury it?

Does sound like a fuel issue, seen it happen a few times at work and you know where I work :whistle:

Happened to mine few times where it suddenly dies, sits for few minites and starts again.

Reason: ignition switch

What happens is it loses contact so car suddenly dies then the contact point barely touches and starts again.
Car will lose all power and start deaccelerating.

Replace a new ignition switch and all will be fine. Common problem in my car model and luckily Honda offered a recall.

this ain't a honda dood... and 93 camrys ignition switches are NOT common fail items...

when it stalls, pull a spark plug wire out, put a screw driver in it and check for spark when cranking... if there is no spark, or the spark is orange, then u more than likely need a coil...

my bet is a failed coil... fuel pumps on these cars don't randomly stop working and then start working again later on, unless the fuel pump has previously been replaced before with a cheep aftermarket pump... crap fuel pumps overheat all the time...

Obviously he doesnt own a honda but doesnt mean it couldnt be the ignition switch.
The problems are similar so why not double check?

Few members had this similar problem so I mention and hopefully it helps...

a common "dying" problem with the 3s/5s motors is the way the intake tubing sits in the engine bay. it goes against the motion of the motor going forward and backward.

look for any cracks in the tube between the AFM and the throttle body. jdm :fullofwin: duct tape usually fixes that problem. any leaks between those causes the ecu to shut down.

otherwise the order would be coil > ignitor > dizzy...but it doesn't seem to be electrical because it shouldn't restart at all...?

ignition switches breaking are unheard of in toyotas...

Just talked to my mom again and she said it didn't bog down when it stalled, so I'm guessing that rules out any fuel related issues. Since it suddenly died, it probably is electrical then.

Are there any better ways to diagnose a faulty coil other than to wait til it dies again? The problem currently seems to be intermittent.

it might be clogged air intake. happened to a friend. it would start up everytime but die 2 seconds after it started.

Seen issues like this arise from bad battery terminal.

Make sure it's not corroded as hell.

alright, sorry to be mean in my other post... ur instructions were to replace a switch and that would be the mean all end all to his problems there... i'm sure it won't... i do know that ignition switches are a common fail item on mid to late 90's hondas... and even some newer... but in my 12 years of experience exclusively with toyota, i have NEVER sold an ignition switch due to failure... only due to vandalism...
