:fuckthatshit: drivers would sooner burn tranlink to the ground before accepting these charges

CP.AR 10-18-2012 12:07 AM

WHERE DOES THE MONEY TO "CITY TRANSIT" GO?
IT'S LIKE A CRACKHEAD ASKING FOR MONEY - HE JUST GOES AWAY FOR 5 MINUTES THEN COMES BACK AND ASKS FOR MORE

Translink has to be the most inefficient heap of shit known to all of mankind when it comes to money management. So fucking spoiled that it makes spoiled kids look like they have money sense

dude as a student who drives because it's more convenient and I won't be late for class, this is ridiculous. You pay translink i think 8 cents per litre of gas, parking at school or anywhere has a ~20% tax that goes to translink, and then the new bridge is going to be another ~$6 a day. And the cherry on top is, paying for a U-Pass is mandatory for full time students!!! I can pay a bus driver 1 day of work for every week I don't use transit.

* i'm not sure if all the numbers are correct, but close enough.

TRDood 10-18-2012 12:15 AM

So... What's wrong with a user pay system? Bus riders should pay for translink's service. Raise prices and grow customer base.

If prices goes too high, then grant licenses to small scale van/bus service to remain competitive.

Drivers should pay for roads and bridges, not subsidize the seat for a hobo that spits at the bus driver and doesn't pay a dime.

Translink is responsible for the MRN, which funds maintenance and improvements on the major road networks, as well as a number of bridges including Knight Street, Pattulo, and Golden Ears. Translinks fuck up with Golden Ears volume is the primary cause of the current budget deficit, it's racking up $41 million a year in loses.

Drivers aren't subsidizing public transit nearly as much as people assume, if at all.

I'm ashamed this proposal was even considered. Fucking retards.

Akinari 10-18-2012 01:42 AM

That's ridiculous.

SupraTTturbo2jz 10-18-2012 01:51 AM

holy fuck, fuck translink. I cross 3 cities every fuckin day twice.

i hate icbc and translink out of everything in this whole world

rsx 10-18-2012 01:53 AM

Opiola noted there’s a perception that driving should be free even though it costs money to maintain the roads and bridges. TransLink must define what those costs are so the public understands.

No one thinks this way? WTF :suspicious:

The problem with this proposal is that like fuel taxes, people will find a way to reduce the amount they drive in order to avoid paying fees. The policy will have the unintended effect of reducing revenues.

A vehicle levy makes the most sense in the short term. The number of cars in the Lower Mainland has increased substantially over the last 20 years.

Translink could trim the fat and perhaps develop some of its real estate holdings, but they can't be blamed for everything. They were given a shitty hand by the provincial government - the situation they're in is tantamount to having been castrated, to put it bluntly. Yet, demand for transit continues to increase and road congestion gets worse. Something's gotta give...

Cue the RS peanut gallery.

Fappin 10-18-2012 02:35 AM

Tax people who don't use public transit to fund public transit projects. Fuck logic

Tim Budong 10-18-2012 02:50 AM

This move will push me to move out of Vancouver and work in Hong Kong instead.... I love this city, but this has gone too damn far.

I understand that by adding more transit is necessary with our growing population, at the same time, how about trying to make our transit system that we have now MORE EFFICIENT.

If this was the case, more people will be willing to take transit...not out of misery becuz its too expensive to drive to work but rather have the confidence in our transit system to get them to wherever they need to be on a timely schedule.

im on the same boat as you, if anything like this happens i am for the first time actually considering to move out of vancouver. always thought this would be the place id live the rest of my life but this is literally to much.

Prolowtone 10-18-2012 06:11 AM

I understand that it takes money to improve or build things... But it is bullshit to keep taxing the people who do not use transit to pay for transit, when you do nothing but seemingly waist the money elsewhere. this monopolized government is collapsing in on itself, im going back to Alberta and advising my mom and her boyfriend to stay on the outer limits of this area when buying a house in the next year :(

!SG 10-18-2012 06:23 AM

corrupt spending by the unaccountable

hotjoint 10-18-2012 07:35 AM

holy fuck, this is retarded. Non stop rape from translink.

murd0c 10-18-2012 07:38 AM

Translink is the biggest fucken joke around, we pay tax on top of tax and where does that get us? we have to pay more fucking taxes over and over because Translink doesn't know how to control their money.

They pay their employees top dollars to work there and I swear a lot are worse then city employees. I live in Surrey and I'm already pissed having to pay to go over the new port man but this is a complete fucken joke and no way it will go through.

freakshow 10-18-2012 08:03 AM

The only thing I learned from that article is that I need a job at translink.

Great68 10-18-2012 08:04 AM

Yeah, they'd have to kill me before I'd let them install some GPS thing into my Mustang.

melloman 10-18-2012 08:09 AM

RS Riot Meet.. held outside Translinks head office.

BRING YOUR TORCHES AND PITCHFORKS! :ilied:

Lomac 10-18-2012 08:14 AM

Okay, so now that the initial shock has worn off for us, there are a couple things to keep in mind. First off, these are just suggestions. There were probably many more but these were the ones the media chose to run with in their stories. Also, Translink isn't just transit... they maintain our bridges and roads... y'know, the ones that we drive on every day.
