regulation is NOT the answer, simple economics show that government intervention creates inefficiency

oil is a finite resource, as it gets more expensive to drill and refine, it should get more expensive to buy - as this happens, there will be increased research into alternatives

what canadians should be upset with is the level of taxation on fuel - that is the main reason we pay so much more than in the US - regulation would result in less taxes received (it can't affect the cost of production) - so we will be taxed in other ways, and heaven knows we can't get taxed on our income or consumption much more without dire consequences to the economy

I'm not surprised gas prices drop in the winter. Less people drive due to snow (maybe not so much here due to the lack of snow). I guess that might entice people to drive.

Then, when summer comes around and people want to drive, gas goes right up.

Last week gas price in Nanaimo 132.9
Price in Duncan 118.9
Gas from Nanaimo and Duncan comes from the same depot in Nanaimo.

The wholesale gas price for gas stations in Nanaimo was higher than the retail price in Duncan.

I don't think oil prices have a big affect on gas prices.

I totally agree. I don't remember the exact years, but I remember there were times when crude oil prices dropped but the price at the pump stayed the same.

Finally, someone who gets it!

We can't change the companies that have us by the balls, but we can change our shite governments and their redundant policies

Then our gas prices would be similar to Alberta say, which is still signicantly more than in the US.

And the money that comes from carbon tax and Translink taxes will then come out of your paycheque as increased income tax, which is much less visible for most.

Regulating pricing isn't the answer. Regulating pricing strategies, however, might be. Why not make it so that gas stations have to put a markup based on their wholesale price? Why should it be that a station is changing their sign three times a day when the price they paid for the gas hasn't changed at all, given that they'll get deliveries once or twice a week?

Now that I've taken time to read the article, I noticed News1130 consulted Jason Toews the CEO of GasBuddy. Not only is Toews not an economist, but he has an invested interest in inciting concern over rising gas prices.

The article would have more validity if I were the information source, it's that bad.

Oh wait. Duncan Gas Prices - Find Cheap Gas Prices in Duncan, British Columbia

Could be.

awesome to see gas prices dropping, but when your car sips gas it doesn't make a huge difference anyways, over the long run it might if prices stay consistent and they usually don't. and i assume once prices start rising people will drive conservatively right? lol

A fair point, my only gripe with this is that the government should have no role in pricing, but equally, there should not be price setting by the oil companies / production cuts to raise price - oligopolies, duopolies, and monopolies are dangerous in most situations

I filled up for 110.9 in Duncan. Damn it feels a lot nicer at that price. Lower!

Filled up for 110 in Kamloops three weeks ago. Was a rather pleasant surprise considering the gas prices for the remainder of my trip into the Interior was >132.

Iceman-19 11-20-2012 10:10 PM

Ive been getting gas in Abby/Silverdale at 111.9 for the last 2-4 weeks on and off. 87 cents a litre in washington!

hotjoint 11-21-2012 06:59 AM

Felt good to fill up at 119.5 the other day. I don't think we'll drop to 1.15

H.Specter 11-21-2012 08:59 AM
