I need help on how to convert/compress .mp4 videos
 

So I have two issues...

1) I want to compress my videos that I record from my phone (Galaxy S2). Recording even 30 mins of video = 400mb, and that's only on 640x480 too. I figured I can either use Premiere CS3 or some guy on YouTube said I can do it easily using Windows Movie Maker. If anyone has a better method, please let me know. I'm pretty noob at this video editing stuff.

2) So the problem is, my phone records videos in .mp4 format. I'm not sure if there is a way to change this, but both Premiere CS3 and Windows Movie Maker can't read .mp4 format. So now I don't even know how to work on this video.

To the video gurus, please advise...

mp4 is like the most compatible format there is, and both those programs can read it.

Which version of WMM do you have?
Cause it isn't working on my Movie Maker or my Premiere CS3

What version is that? Your windows look like Windows XP :fuckthatshit:

Anyway, a modern phone should be using h.264, which is why I assumed that's what the file was (mp4 is just a container). To find out what codec it uses, load it up in VLC or something and look at the file details.

what is the goal?
what file size would you like it to be?
what file format and resolution do you want it ? AVI, MP4 , FLV

Doesn't really matter which format.
My goal is to keep my file size down so I can share videos, post them on youtube, fb, etc.

I'm not sure how many MB is a 720p youtube video,
but let's say 100mb or lower would be nice. The lower the better.

It's not very efficient uploading/sharing 300-400+ MB video files.

Handbrake will work, but might be difficult for you to figure out. The suggestions I made were more 'drag and drop' solutions.

You could even use something like MediaEspresso or MediaConverter, which are also drag and drop, and will even use your GPU if it's faster than your CPU. If you have an Intel GPU, you can encode your video in seconds.

So I'm bumping this thread again.

Cause now I'm more ready with a newer computer.
(Win8, Premiere CS6)

But anyway, I'm not sure if Premiere is overkill.
I have Handbrake installed. But not sure what's the best codec to use.
It's at H.264 by default, but is that generally the best one to use?

I set the x264 Preset to the "Placebo" setting
and ended up converting my mp4 video from 405mb to 262mb.

So wondering if there's a better/efficient way?

And should the output be set to mp4 or mkv?
