To be honest they couldn't just keep the manga going on about drifting and still be fresh. It's a lot less entertaining for the anime, no doubt, but driving theory isn't necessarily bad.

Because Initial D
FWD, RWD, and AWD can all drift. The difference primarily lies in how the drift is induced, and what you need to do to keep that drift going.
