windows live messenger discontinued for skype

heard about this earlier this week. been using MSN for years. sorry to see it go

Microsoft to drop Messenger, switch to Skype

Lomac 11-12-2012 10:14 AM

Skype... Can you still use it even if you don't have a webcam or microphone? Or is it purely a video call service?

vyrospec 11-12-2012 10:17 AM

^ yes, its basically another IM service. just with better integrated call services

twitchyzero 11-12-2012 10:23 AM

last time I glanced at my live msgr contacts when I was logged into hotmail i think i saw less than 15 friends online.

sad to see it go as I probably spent most of my online hours on it during high school.

screw texting/skype...time to go back to ICQ i guess

With Facebook and Skype, it was just a matter of time MSN will be dead. Skype is a better program, especially in terms of group conversations, and the ability to have voice chats without hassle.

Works with audio-only, or text-only chat... has apps on pretty much all phone platforms... allows voice calls to and from regular phone numbers... yeah, it's a little more than just video conferencing.

Facebook chat did to Messenger what Messenger did to ICQ ... Circle of life

Too bad the Skype client just doesn't feel anywhere as polished as the messenger one.

dachinesedude 11-12-2012 06:42 PM

i love the skype app, instant msging plus free long d call if both sides using skype, all mobile now, win win

kakucaekz 11-12-2012 10:14 PM

Damn, MSN was awesome a few years back. A lot of my friends switched over to Skype within the last year, and I forced myself to try it, even though I liked MSN. Now I prefer Skype lol, barely use MSN any more. Don't know how to import contacts to Skype though, or at least haven't tried..

Soundy 11-12-2012 10:24 PM

MSN Messenger just got more and more bloated and started causing issues on all my PCs to the point I just stopped installing it.

Skype should be able to connect to your Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and other accounts to check your contacts for recognized emails.

!MiKrofT 11-13-2012 12:14 AM

Skype will import your MSN contacts automatically when you sign in with your msn account.

yes, it went from like a 500k program to whatever size...that's why i only use the hotmail web msgr but looks like it'll be gone soon too.

looks like i'll have to try to remember my skype account login

IIRC if you log in on skype with your msn account it'll port everything over. Or...something.

I really only talk to maybe 5 people on msn. But it's good. I still prefer it as my main method of communication when I'm on the PC.

And the reason I like MSN is because of the custom avatars I can make (most of them were meme faces).
I like talking to my buddies and throwing in all the meme emoticons.
Not sure if you can do that on other Instant Messengers...
:suspicious:

It's like imagine if RS suddenly loses it's function to use meme's or emoticons altogether.
I know it's not a big deal for everyone, but I figured the emoticons were what made the difference between the fun in chatting,
vs just communicating (straight to the point).

I think it was mostly due to people switching to mobile IM apps.

I know that was the reason with a lot of my friends
