Internet setup in the basement Newbie on networking. I am planning to have a home theater/ps3/pc setup in my basement. My router and modern are on the second floor. How would I get internet in basement? I heard of powerline networking but I am not sure if the basement outlet is on the same bridge as the oulet upstairs. Would I need a switch in the basement as well, as the smart TV needs an ethernet cable and the PS3 would too, or if I want to connect a computer down there too? How did you guys run your setup and what would you recommend me? |
Wireless network? Unless your router is not wireless. Smart TV and PS3 have built in wireless network cards. You can purchase a wireless network card for your PC as well or you'll just have to run ethernet cable all the way upstairs to the router. I have my Shaw modem and D-Link wireless router in the basement suite and everything is hooked up via wifi network. |
I dont want to go wireless bcz i know the speed will be unstable. Not ideal for gaming. |
Then you'll have to run ethernet cables from the desired device to the router |
Powerline ethernet at 500mbps should be enough. It can push around 50mbps. Buy it from bigbox store so you can return it if it doesn't work in your house. You can connect a switch to the output of the powerline module to split it no problem. |
Powerline for the mother fucking win. |
buy the powerline from fs or bb to see if it works or not. if not then the best solution is run your own cat cable to the basement. |
so you guys use powerline? I should be able to connect that one adapter anywhere in the house right? |
I use powerline Ethernet as per !MiKrofT's suggestion to me several years ago. To this day, never once disappointed. |

Yeah ive been using power line as well. However for my home if i plug it through a surge protector the speed gets chopped by like half so straight wall outlet to wall out for me. |
Just went powerline today with the D-Link AV500. Any tips on increasing speed? I live in a condo. |
you wouldnt want to go wireless through the basement unless you get a commerical router.. haha signal would be pretty weak.. Powerline ethernet would be best option if you wont want to run cables through your house... Quote:

just looked up what powerline ethernet is mind is fucking blown. Why did I not get this sooner? Wasted so much time and effort with wireless N routers + adaptor cards for my PC |
PowerLine AV 500 Adapter Starter Kit Or TP-Link TL-PA511KIT AV500 Gigabit Powerline Adapter Starter Kit both are rated up to 500Mbps, very close in price around $90.. Never really had much luck with D-Link stuff.. Not sure how good TP-Link is... |
