Workplace hasn't paid in over a month Asking on behalf of a friend. Her work hasn't paid her in over a month. Her boss always says "we're working on it, etc." It was found out they apparently aren't paying the company that they're renting the office from. Any advice or tips on how to handle this situation appreciated.. |
time to look for a new job, cut losses and move on |
dono if it would help as i dono all of what they do but maybe look into the BBB (Better Business Bureau). |
Do a google search for bc labour relations, tell her to call them. Shes probably not going to get paid at this point. |

You can contact the BC Employment Standards branch (Employment Standards Branch, Ministry of Labour, Government of B.C.) I worked at a job where I didn't get paid for a month, they said that one of their clients still needed to pay, and that the 'check was in the mail'. I stayed there a few more weeks while i was looking for a new job.. At the end of the day, bc employment standards (or maybe labour relations) got some money out of them and sent me a check.. The company was still around afterwards, but their website contact changed from Vancouver BC to Panama Republic, no joke. |

I didn't know that until now. Kind of stupid if you ask me, why have 2 different agencies that do the same thing? |
Labour relations board doesn't just handle unionized companies; they handle non-union as well. When I worked for a company that had me as a general contract worker instead of being on their payroll to get out of paying ei, paying me for overtime and stats I was able to get the money they owed me after I quit. Contact them and tell them the story and they will either help you or tell you where to go to get the help Posted via RS Mobile |

BBB does nothing and I don't know why so many people say to call them. They have no power over anything. |
Employment Standards should be the first thing done. They're usually very helpful with cases. Not that I'd recommend this route, but uou could always tell your friend that she should tell her boss that she'll simply sit in the lunch room for her every shift until she gets paid. Surprisingly, that worked for a friend of mine after his boss didn't pay him for a month and a half. But exceptions =/= the rule, I've noticed. :lol But seriously, BC Employment Standards should be the number one priority for her if she wants to get paid. |
WOW! I have heard of this kind of thing happening. What does ‘working on it” mean? Her boss owes her an explanation. You know the boss is getting paid. Your friend needs to get a legal aid lawyer to write these creeps a letter A.S.A.P. I would see if I could get a lean on the company’s assets. Next these creeps need to be exposed to the public. The company most likely belongs to an association; the boss most likely belongs to a group, club, church, organization. These groups need to know about these creeps. I want to know who these guys are… if I am doing business with them I’ll stop and tell them why. I will also let everyone I know what these creeps are doing to their employees. These guys need to be stopped, you can not treat anyone like that and get away with it. |
Sometimes I go on a rant when I see someone being treated unfairly |
Time to start borrowing office supplies |

You really don't know that. When my dad has his business there were times when we would get fucked over hard and have hundreds of thousands in accounts receivables outstanding. At the end of the day he never not paid an employee on time but I know for a fact there were months where he didn't get paid anything at all but he always made sure he found a way to make payroll. That said I wouldn't stay at this job the OP's friends at if she isn't getting paid, that's fucked up. |
is the work boss,chinese?. |

Their office is located 2 minutes from the Richmond AutoMall and they're usually not very busy. The people there deal with this day in, day out so they know the process and the Employment Standards Act very well and will be able to point you in the right direction and get the complaint against the employer started. |
Is this a real job or some under the table job because they're here illegally? |

OP's friend should still leave, but I certainly wouldn't assume that the owner/founder/boss is still taking money out of the company when he can't even meet his opex. |
lots of IF's and BUT's here but having a good chat with the boss would be step #1 update thread when done. |
Honestly, how hard is it to professionally approach your boss and ask what the current situation is? |

Tell your friend to tell the boss if she isn't getting paid the full amount they own her by Monday she is going to the labour boards with the details. At least give him the chance to pay her. |
Thanks all for the responses!! |
