Set a maximum $ ur willign to spend early on in ur mind and then at the last 10-30seconds of auction, place your maximum bid.

i have use a few sniping service and they work great every time. I never get any spam mail from it. Most service have a limit of how many auctions you can snipe a month, if you want to snipe more you can pay for vip service.

Smartsnipe
Gixen
AuctionInsight

they all have work great for me. Sometimes for the heck of it i would set all of them to bid for the same item and see which one wins.

What are eBay bots and how do they work? What is their purpose? (Serious question as I do not use it very often.)

Don't have to be worried about e-bay bots.
Just use one yourself with any of the free "bots" suggested by threezero.

I've personally used all 3 before and they never fail in terms of getting my bid through.

If you still get outbid, then you simply didn't bid enough money.
Highest bid always wins, regardless of others sniping manually or with bots.

The only reason I "snipe" is for psychological purposes.
Because occasionally, you stumble upon indecisive bidders who max their bid amount.
Only to get beat by you "too early" and then they will change their mind and re-bid a new max amount just to beat yours.
