I feel bad for those getting layed off...even though I badmouth your typical FS/BB employee a lot

I also feel bad for the company...I know BB USA in the last 2 holidays have been offering such killer deal (or perks like free shipping for ALL orders) but Amazon/Newegg will only get bigger and squeeze them out like Circuit City. I was reading how Amazon was pushing for "showrooming" these retail stores by allowing some app where when you compared prices in a BB store you get XX% discount off lol.

But yeah it's idiotics ti have such monstrous retail space...they should be operating the at half of their size and only keep popular items in stock.

Let's hope they stick around...i like to keep my pricematching options (let's be real...Memory express has very limited selection)

Employees arrived for their shift at the Sherbrooke, Que., location this morning and were met by security guards and closed doors. They said they did not receive advance notice of the closure.
This happened in West Kelowna this morning. That store opened October 2011 and was the anchor store in a brand new strip mall.

Im not surprized by it closing tho. There is a Future Shop in Kelowna and within a couple months of eachother, they opened a huge Best Buy a block away that was a massive expansion into the mall, and then West Kelowna got a Future Shop. No one thought Kelowna was big enough for 3 of the same store plus all the local A/V stores plus london drugs etc.

IMO, an absolutely classless way of dealing with their staff.

Won't be giving them my money anytime soon.

Agreed, really not classy.

I think they should have planned it better, however they probably wanted a hard close like this to prevent any looting/stealing. If the employees were told ahead of time, some may take the opportunity to get some "insurance."

I've seen people get laid off at my work, and it is always a quick goodbye to prevent theft of company secrets etc. There are tactful ways to do this, such as provide a good severance, reference letter, and exit interview etc.

agreed, people showing up to work to later finding out the place closed down :okay: breaks my heart, especially seniors doing this

I know employees who have worked with the company for over 10 years (FutureShop) that were let go last week because they did not have enough room for them anymore. These people have built a livelihood at FutureShop and probably have devoted a fair amount of loyalty to a company that couldn't care less about them.

I worked at Future Shop before...I knew the atmosphere of the store and the way the employees were treated...you were just a number and at the end of the day you had no job security. I had worked there for 5 years and saw people come and go (fired) in high positions and low. Managers, GM's, DM's, LP and HR reps. All for no reason, simply because they needed to go a new direction. Never treat a job like that as a livelihood. Give to a company like that, only the same amount that you receive back. I say this because companies like these try to swindle as much energy and time from you and compensate you with the bare minimum. They don't deserve your respect or loyalty.

Mr.HappySilp 01-31-2013 11:53 PM

Haen't been shopping there at FS or Best buy for ages.
Last time I went to buy a HDMI canble FS was selling for $20... went to crystal mall and they sell it for $10.

dark0821 02-01-2013 12:29 AM

man, i feel bad for the employees, honestly though, the only time I go to BB is for their "clearance" blurays and/or checking out an item that I will purchase online later. Just to feel the real thing in my hand before pulling the trigger. Its unfair as I understand the mark up of prices is due to the running cost of a huge store space/demo products. But until I am ballin I guess I will stick with my cheap asian tactics lol. As I know FS is commission based, I feel bad for wasting their time lol.

The BB on SW Marine drive is pretty dead as well and it just opened up a few months ago. I know BB down in the states has been in trouble for a while now so I guess it's spread up here.

jeedee 02-01-2013 12:46 AM

Its been a problem with BB/FS for years now.

After the Christmas season, stores across the country are dead.

There was a mass firing at HQ on Wednesday. The VP of Expanded Assortment got fired as well. That's huge news because Expanded Assortment (all the non-electronic stuff you see on the site) is just starting to take off right now.

KingDeeCee 02-01-2013 01:07 AM

The employees don't know anything. Hell, even the managers have no idea what's going on. I've went in every time they had a T&S promotion on their blurays and every single time, I've had to wait at least 15 minutes at the CS desk for someone to find out what the heck I was talking about.

In my personal experience, the sales person would give u a tougher time in honoring the price match especially if it's a bigger ticket item (as it eats into their commission). I have much better experience price matching at NCIX and MemoryExpress.

Ya PM'ing there has been like pulling teeth I don't bother with them anymore. Too frustrating wasting my time arguing with one employee while it works with another

dinamix 02-01-2013 01:34 AM

I dont feel bad for the employees.Working at bb and fs is a garbage job. Stay in school kids.

thats if they say they dont have stock.. haha

Few times i went into BB and tried to price match, only to hear them say,
Sorry we are out of stock, only Opened box items in stock.... Then my mom goes in to buy at "their" price and they suddenly have it :suspicious:

That's one of the the dumbest thing I've ever heard...You think these are all just "kids" that work there? People who have plenty of options? Men and women who had the luxury, yes LUXURY of going to post-secondary school? Many of these people have made a commitment to this company 10-15 years ago and have been making a decent living for themselves. Prior to this, they were at the very least, able to put food on their tables for their families. As we know, many of these people were/are older(aged) immigrants. Now they don't have jobs and you don't feel for them because they didn't get a proper education? You're talking some grade A, uneducated garbage right there my friend. I feel sorry for you and your poor attitude towards other people who weren't as fortunate as you and I to have a higher degree of education.

iKayChow 02-01-2013 07:27 AM

hope these employees didn't get completely jewed over.. hope they atlease got a termination pay or severance pay since it was short notice well no notice. maybe the amount is enough temporarily to find a new job

melloman 02-01-2013 07:28 AM

Yeah really not surprised they have to close abunch of stores..

Like said above, they JUST opened a new BB on Marine Drive at Ontario..

I will be interested to see what goes up at the Queensborough location, as there are a decent amount of smaller outlets there already.

GLOW 02-01-2013 07:31 AM

locking out the doors with zero notice is pretty cold, i guess companies believe they need to protect themselves this way. gone through something not to that extent but was a day where 1/3 of the staff was abruptly tapped on the shoulder, handed papers and escorted out. straight b-line to the front door. you had to come back another day to pick up a box of stuff they boxed for you...my PC was left on and running.

you do realize that the majority of employees ARE students, right?

If Futureshop/BB is trying to go after more online sales, they won't get any cash from me.

The very first (and only) time I tried to buy something online from them they lost my order (It never got shipped, Canada Post never received it) and it took me almost 2 months to get my money back.

Just wait till they go bankrupt like H&M and like Blockbuster then you will have no where to test out the product before you buy onine:fullofwin:

I feel bad for them. What Best Buy/Future Shop needs is smaller store front (they don't need all that empty space and they certinaly don't need to stock all thier stuff on site just popular items). Improve their online store with special promo every week to attract customer, provide local pick up if possible.
