Rogers Slow Wireless Connection?

Just had the rogers express internet installed last week (25Mbps/2Mpbs), and it comes with their own modem/router.

I get the full 25Mbps when connected directly via ethernet cable, but the problem is when connected via wifi, I am only getting 5-7Mbps. This is the same on my PC, laptop, iphone, playbook..etc

Is this normal? I thought wireless N is much faster than 5-7Mbps??
What is actually limiting my wifi speed to only 5-7Mbps?
Is the slow speed because of rogers own modem/router?
Will it help if I buy a new router and connect it to rogers modem/router and connect all my other device to the new router instead?

Never tried Rogers, but had similar situation with Telus. Using my own router improved it 100%, although wireless is still a tiny bit slower than a direct connection (naturally)

That does not seem to be normal. Wireless N routers are rated for much higher than what your service provider can give you, so you should be getting max speed even on wifi. You can try to call technical support.

It could be that the particular unit they gave me is defective, but I've heard similar stories from a few people. The modem/router combo they give cuts in and out and isn't very strong throughout the house. Bought an $60 router and it was way better. Mine's pretty old though but it was working poorly from the start.

Speed tests would show that it would hit the max speeds but would fluctuate up and down throughout the test. Downloading would fluctuate from max speeds all the way down to 1-2kb/s. Couldn't ever keep the speed constant

tried calling tech support...the rep basically said they will only guarantee speed for wired connection
my own wifi connection is speed is none of their business

My thoughts exactly. It's not on their website. I do see a 21mbps with rockethub but 5GB is like $60.

oops..i am in the east coast hence rogers.

just wanted to let everyone know I got a router (a cheap $30 cisco valet), connected it to the rogers modem gateway and i am getting the full 25Mbps on my wireless connection now...
(which basically means the rogers modem gateway suck ball and limit your wifi speed to 7Mbps)

Nice. East coast has some decently priced providers
