HELP! No network access local only
 

Hey Guys, Im quite shitty with computers and yes I tried googling but it didnt help. My moms laptop cannot connect to the internet but is connected to the router and the IPv4 connectivity thing just says Local Only and not Internet. I tried disconnecting the router and plugging it back in and the laptop would connect to the internet but there would be 2 networks popped up with the second network saying "internet 2" and the first network saying "internet". Once the computer is turned off/on there would be no internet again and only "Local Only". Heres my IP config if it helps

All the other computers/laptops/iphones all can connect to the internet. Please help me as I'm literally about to rage and smash this laptop lol. Thanks in advance.

What are the IP addresses of other devices on the network? Are they 192.168.1.x addresses, or 192.168.7.x addresses? It's uncommon for the DHCP server and DNS server to be different addresses, as they're usually on the same device.

check your DNS settings. usually in a home network, the dhcp server is the same as the dns server.
check the network adapter to see if it was ever configured with static dns settings.

Thanks for the replies guys. On my computer the IP address is 192.168.1.x and I see that the DHCP server and DNS server both have matching addresses.

It's weird. It shows that DHCP enabled.

Sorry for the dumb question, but is that laptop connecting to the same access point as other devices?

Anyways, you can check your DNS and the rest of the settings (assuming win 7), by:
1. Press the windows button/key
2. type view network
3. click on network connections
4. right click on the wireless connection and click properties
5. in the list of items, double click on the one that has "internet protocol ipv4"
6. if everything is normal, everything is set to automatic.

Yeah pretty sure it is connecting to same access point. Iunno if this helps but my dad was screwing around with the router cause he got some chinese tv box and it needs to be connected to the router but I've already disconnected that so it shouldn't have any effect...

the laptop is on windows vista :badpokerface: but so basically it should show the Wireless Network Connection Status which shows the IPv4 Connectivity, IPv6 Connectivity, Media State, SSID etc right? Media State and SSID are the same as my computer but the IPv4 and IPv6 both say Local Only where as on my computer it says (IPv4)Internet and (IPv6)No Internet Access. Earlier on my computer it had 2 Network connections aswell but the second connection was named "Unidentified Network" but everything was connected to the same access point but I somehow got rid of that...

You can try disabling TCP/Ipv6 and just using TCP/Ipv4 which is what I did. So it should look like this

what you can try is change the dns to 8.8.8.8 like this

if your internet works then something is wrong with your dhcp server settings (router)

This is an alternate way to fix your problem, assuming the problem is on the routers end.

This doesn't fix your current issue, all this does is "starts you from fresh".

Imo, if it's an issue at home, it's easier to do than to resolve a problem than to try to spend hours figuring out that one issue.

Also before I get into that I'm going to list a few things for you to try before you do it. I am assuming your just a regular home user, that doesn't tamper with any of the settings (numbers and stuff).

edit1: i also forgot to mention, if your using like a wpa2 password, idk why some computers.... (ones running windows) hate WPA and stuff and just stops all of a sudden, and changing the security protocol to WEP will resolve the issue. Its weird but it works O_O

^thanks man I didn't try any of those yet, was planning on trying today but for some reason it started working again... everything seems correct saying "Local Only and Internet Access". Weird...

192.168.7.0 is used by d-link devices for their 'guest' wifi network.

i'd assume the dns is correct at 192.168.1.1, and the reason why windows says local only is because you need to open a browser and put in the guest wifi password.
