Visiting China, school me on proxies and VPN

As the title suggested, I am leaving for China next Tuesday for 6 weeks. I would love to retain the ability to go on facebook, youtube etc etc.

Now even though google has come out with a million solutions. I am just wondering if any of you had any first hand experience with any of the services or any programs that works better than others?

regardless being VPN or Proxy, which route did you take and why? how secure is it, and are paid VPNs always the safest route to take? I would want free service but ya -.- hmm...

Thanks in Advance =P

I use Astrill and it have worked great for me. But I find it very dependent on the connection that you would have in China. If you have a crappy ISP whose connection to US/HK sucks, you'd connect to FB, Youtube.. etc, but just not very fast.

Nevertheless, I was using it with a 3G mi-fi on China Mobile and speed was very decent. (I tested on speedtest.net and I got between 50~160KB/s)

Find a UBC friend. Use their account to access vpn. Free and it works well.

Always use VPN over Proxy in China. Even paid VPN services get blocked occasionally. I'd look into Witopia, Astrill, PrivateInternetAccess, and StrongVPN. Don't use HideMyAss, they are known for keeping logs (which defeats the purpose of having a VPN).

I recommend PrivateInternetAccess because they are known for superior privacy and will not log your activity. Astrill is also very good, like another use had recommended, it really depends on how reliable your internet connection there is.

UBC VPN is very slow.

UBC VPN is best.
I'm using it here in Australia (for a few days anyways when simcity worked) and I barely noticed a lag in speed.

Use the Internet behind their firewall. It's the only way to truly experience all of china lol

I 2nd Astrill. Works awesome. If you pay for their stealthVPN service rather than just openweb, it's a beast
