Being patriotic labels you a racist. I was at Westbrook Mall waiting for a dentist appointment in the food court area. Three obviously almost deaf Italian-or Spanish-speaking men were speaking their native language loudly. I walked up and asked if they were Canadian citizens. They all said yes (in English).
I then asked them if they could please speak English. They asked me why. I said being a Canadian means speaking English or French; Canada is bilingual only.
They shrugged their shoulders.
I went back to my coffee. Not 10 seconds later, they started speaking their language again. I got up and yelled, "You want to speak your language, go back to your country." Two security guards approached me and said these men come there almost every day, and they can speak whatever language they want.
I yelled at them, "You are obviously immigrants that don't remember why you came to Canada; to start a new life, you two did." They then asked me to leave. I said phone the cops, I have a dentist appointment. I then went to my appointment.
It's almost illegal to be patriotic. Canada needs language police. Go figure, eh?

i would say most of these people who complain about others speaking another language in public , themselves to not speak another language other than say english
this guy in question probably does not travel much. and probably his own heritage language (for example, if his great grandfather was Russian and they settled in Alberta way back when) is not in tact with him

can't help but feel like most people who bitch about immigrants not speaking the national language are butt hurt that they aren't as successful as people around them whom they deem as "foreigners".
wtf does language have to do with anything.
if you want to be patriotic, you should concentrate on bettering your own country and/or improving your country's presence on the world stage.
contribute to bettering your country's economy, contribute to medical breakthroughs that will be used world-wide, contribute to bettering/setting and example for other countries in terms of human rights issues, etc.
speaking or not speaking your national language does not improve or worsen one's country.
language has about as much to do with patriotism as sex, race, sexual orientation, height, etc.

I kind of like the replies. Especially the last one:

Shameful
I had to read Barry Whiteley’s bigoted rant several times to make sure it wasn’t some sort of clever, ironic condemnation of the nonsense some people get up to in the name of patriotism. After making sure this wasn’t the case, I ask: What kind of person does this and then writes a letter to the editor and proudly trumpets his ignorance to the world?
Give your head a shake, Barry. What you did isn’t even remotely patriotic. It is pure bigotry, and if you have a shred of personal insight left in your body, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Protocols
Barry Whiteley confronted a trio of unbelievably rude and ignorant men who were conversing loudly in an offensive, non-official language, which he believes to have been Spanish or Italian (we can only be thankful it wasn’t Portuguese or Catalan), right smack in the middle of Westbrook Mall. Whiteley attempted to correct their faux pas by yelling at them to “go back to their country.” I do not wish to criticize Whiteley’s handling of the situation, but, I believe the traditional, accepted protocol in such circumstances is to shout, “Speak white, you filthy immigrant scum!”
Who gives a fuck what language anyone speaks. Borders are just imaginary lines we humans made up anyway.
And wtf is with being patriotic? Why is it so common to be proud of where you were born? It's not a choice, it was completely random so there's no reason to be proud of it. You should be proud of accomplishments like getting a university degree or getting a black belt or even building your first gaming rig, but not proud of there you were born.
I don't mind other people speaking their native tongue, I am EI and I can't speak very much punjabi and I wish I could. I think learning english in an english speaking country should be a requirement, but to tell someone they should speak english like the way this guy did is fucking arrogant. I would of smacked the shit out of him and told him to speak english with a broken jaw.

Whats more disgusting is the press spreading this bullshit nationally as the right thing to do and for foreigner speaking people not to be welcome or shut up in public areas.
We dont really know if this event even happened, but we see what the papers views are to publish this and since the press here is very controlled, you can bet this could be some kind of encouraged protocols from the top.
Whats the point... maybe to spread hate towards foreigners to move away in the long term and further secure the province rich resources. It sounds far fetched but I wouldnt doubt it.
I don't care about people speaking foreign languages. Why not?
But it pisses me off when Richmond Chinese people tell me I should learn Mandarin (never encountered anyone telling me to go learn Cantonese before) knowing that I'm not even Chinese.
Or when people get mad at me because I don't speak so and so language.
Once had a brown person yell at me in what I assume was punjabi... Seriously? Posted via RS Mobile

I agree with you. Every citizen should be expected to know how to write and speak English but if they choose to speak in their own language then so be it. If we went to another country we would be expected to do the same Posted via RS Mobile
