Sumo Oranges aka Dekopon

Anybody try these before? This is the first year where they are somewhat readily available locally and maybe just second or third year they are available in North America.

Basically it's a hybrid citrus originally from Japan but started to grow in California in recent years. They're known to be very sweet, easy to peel and seedless, and were pretty hyped up in the (ugh) foodie-verse the past few years The Dekopon has arrived, at last - latimes.com

Anyway, I got a chance to try it out today, and I must say it lives up to the hype. It tastes like a very sweet tangerine/mandarin orange, soft and juicy in texture, very fragrant.

They're relatively pricey ($2.99/lb) but it's worth a try.

I tried one when I went to visit my cousins at UC Riverside. They're known for their citrus orchard and had a few trees growing this variety. I managed to try half of one and it was pretty tasty. Mind you, they take a lot of care and control at their citrus orchard so other commercial variants may vary.

I've bought them at whole foods before. They were good, but at their price point not worth eating often.

Who cares! They are good for you!

Think about how much money you spend on junk....eating out, beer, pop, junk food, etc. You can never go wrong with spending money on foods that are tasty AND nutritious!

Pound of oranges is what.....4-6 oranges? Thats breakfast or a snack for almost a week at 50 cents each!

Where did you find them?

IGA....well, IGA in New West at least.

sonick 03-27-2013 09:30 PM

most IGA's should have them since they advertised if on their flyer last week.

A pound of oranges is more like 1.5 oranges than 4-6.
