Yearly releases

Hey guys,

I had a discussion with a buddy of mine about games, more specifically, games that get refreshed every year.

I am an FPS player primarily, sports games are my second favorite to play. Each year I buy the newest versions of all the games I play. My buddy is primarily a sports game fan, and he also has the odd FPS. He will buy new versions of sports games he plays every year and updates his FPS titles every other or three years it seems.

He mentioned how it seems dumb I will get the newest version of Call of Duty as soon as they come out, but doesn't see how I compare that to buying the newest version of NHL or MLB every year. Thing is with Call of Duty is that each year it is made from a different developer, where as the sports games he buys are all EA for NHL & FIFA and 2K for MLB.

I think anyone that doesn't fully commit to a certain type of game will not get the little intricacies that make the changes actually seem big.

What do you guys do? Do you rush out to get the newest Assassin's Creed / Call of Duty / (Insert license here) Lego game / Any new season for a sports game? Or do you play one for a couple or more 'seasons' before getting a new one?

personally I feel it's just a cash cow

sports makes sense...as there's new rosters
CoD...well if you love it it would make sense because the community generally dies after a new one comes out
Assassin's Creed I think is suffering from 'fatigue'...people don't need a new storyline every year...not a big deal because its a Ubisoft title and genreally prices drop fast
Lego is differently because each game is set in a different universe (batman vs lord of rings etc)

bottom line...yearly releases should go for no more than $40

It's the equivalent of copy, paste, thesaurus, put name on it.

So many game producers have been lazy as fuck for like a decade now.

I still buy NHL annually because I'm a huge hockey fan, but I'm not happy about the complete lack of progress the series has made.

For some franchises, you have to buy the new version simply because the majority of other online users will migrate.

I still play COD 4.. best COD to date. Sports games are a given, they have roster updates, trades etc as well as they are always evolving. FPS's.. are getting dry they've done everything they can possibly do with them, there won't be a ground breaking FPS game ever again, IMO. I look forwards to games like the GTA series or assassins creed because they involve a good story line and unforgettable game play.

A lot of people do say because of roster changes etc. that they update sports games each time. What if they just patched a roster update?

I personally do what Razor said, I migrate with the crowd. Most of the players will be on the current game so why not.

Like others have said, it's a cash cow.

Once a company realizes that a series (Modern Warefare for example) is bringing in more money than any of their other games, all they need to do is put a little time into it, change some story elements, make a few new environment and add some guns. They'll even make previous games online maps as DLC for the new games so people can use the new guns on old maps, therefore pulling in another 10-15$ per download of the pack... Basically, these yearly games (especially shooters) are the smartest business decision companies like Activision and Treyarch made.

Black ops for zombies, fuck the rest.

Way too competitive on multiplayer.
