Gas Station - Charge screw up?

On Friday, I went to Chevron to fill up and I swiped my credit card and the machine displays "Warm Start" for like 5 mins, I go inside and ask the lady, the machine is messed up and she tells me that "she doesn't know what's going on". She asks me if I want to pre-pay, I said "NO, and told her I will use a different pump.

I filled up $56 at a different pump (I have receipt proof) and today I check my credit card transaction online and there is a $100 Chevron transaction that is being authorized and not posted yet to my account as it was 2 days ago.

Has this happened to anyone before? I remember there was a RS thread about something like this before, but can't seem to find it. I am going to call my credit card company to dispute this as I never filled up $100 and even if I tried, my car is only 40L which can never fill up $100...

Machines preauthorize cards, usually up to $100 or so. You'll see that charge disappear in a couple days.

Happens all the time for me.

A lot of pumps pre-authorize you 100 and then credit back the difference between the 100 and what you actually pump. It happens to be every time at shell, might be the same thing at chevron.

This is pretty standard for credit card transactions at gas station pumps. It's just an automatic $100 pre-authorized charge max. It'll get adjusted to the correct amount when its actually posted to your account, don't worry.

Thanks guys for the quick response.

I didn't know it happens like that. Much appreciated!

just to make things clear, its not pre-CHARGE, its pre authorize, there is a difference, n this difference is what makes a lot of people, especially elders, angry when using credit cards

sadly, i wish their pumps didn't cap at $100.. kinda inconvenient to have to do two transactions..

I agree. Capping pumps at $100 is dumb as lots of cars nowadays fill a lot over $100

some chevrons are $125 (like the one on 49th and elliot), as well as some huskys are too.

Same thing happened to me a few days ago. I look at my credit card online and I'm like WTF it charged $100. Then after it changed to the correct amount.

I've found quite a few gas stations that ask you how much you want to pre-authorize now... I always bring it down closer to $70, as I only need 40 liters, but I'm assuming you can ask for a higher amount?

Yea the $100 automatic pre-authorization is just when you swipe at the pump, if you go inside to the cashier, you can pre-authorize a higher or lower limit.

A few of the stations I go to actually ask at the pump how much you want to pre-auth, might just be Petro Canada though.

The highest I've seen at a pump is $100. I guess they could do more inside.. but that's also a hassle..
