I'll be the first to say:

WHY THE FUCK ARE WE TRYING TO COMPARE OURSELVES TO AUSTRALIA?! THE FUCKING MOST EXPENSIVE PLACE ON THE GODDAMN PLANET?!!?!?!

Fuck, businesses are ALREADY raising their prices to reflect the drop in taxes (because of losing the HST) and now I might get hit with a 10% surcharge because businesses are passing the buck to me?

My response: FUCK YOU

The moment this happens, I'm at the bank changing my chequeing account over to get more debit transactions (only 10/month currently) and putting my fucking CC in a drawer.

It's simple, we don't use credit cards and go back to cash.

uhhhhggghh....more lame fees. I'd rather go to the states (bellingham) a couple times a month or so (and haul back loads of stuff) and do the majority of my shopping there. If you have the means to do this and you live close by the border, you have the advantage (if not, you might not be so lucky)

I'm not surprised this is happening as more and more people are using premium credit cards. I charge a few thousand dollars a month for business and put it all on my credit card for points - I end up getting at least a thousand dollars worth of free flights a year because of it.

The cash versus credit card thing is already happening at a lot of businesses. My mechanic gave me a significant discount for paying in cash last time I checked (I know, it's not just credit card fees for this).

Everyone on RS is frugal (me included), but most people carry credit card debt which means many can't exactly put their CCs away and use cash. Will people stop spending their hard-earned credit on restaurants and other service-related industries if this happens? Only time will tell.

No point in collecting points with your credit card if you're paying the interchange fees. The credit card company only uses a portion of those fees to buy you points. Whatever you wanted from your points, you'd be better off buying on your own

This happened in Australia and it was a huge disaster. I am completely baffled that the Canadian government would follow in their footsteps after seeing what it caused down there.

Canadian retailers really want to put themselves out of business or something
this is just going to backfire and promote more cross-border shopping

Just use your debit card problem solved. If this goes into effect maybe it will cause credit cards to reduce their rates.

You pay the bank for that too, (you might have a package for that) but either way the bank still wins

Don't you think many places already add the cost into the price.

You have to understand that this is an important issue because companies will simply pass on these charges to the consumer through higher prices...often hidden and not separated out.

It is a great business model... for the credit card companies (and subsequently the banks). The government should step in since it is pretty much a monopoly and should be regulated.

That sucks, I love getting points when I buy stuff, which is the only reason why I use credit cards. I can't imagine paying tax and the 10% surcharge ouch.

I thought Credit Card charges the vendor %? Or is there a minimum charge per transaction?
