Rear Caliper Rusting
 

Hey guys,

I just wanted to know if anyone knows how to prevent this problem my rear calipers are starting to rust, they're both functional. Though when I had my pads changed a while ago I was told one of them were beginning to freeze up, but he said they fixed it for the time being so I assume they just got all the surface rust off. Anyways, my calipers are rusting and is there any way to fix this without having to replace the calipers?

I've heard that if I sanded them down, wired brushed, etc and painted them with some enamel paint it'll be okay?

Any advice would be great, thanks.

Painting them will definitely protect them from the elements, but be sure to use quality high-temp paint.
You mentioned your mechanic said that one of them was freezing up; if you're DIY-ing, look into putting in new seals for the pistons if you end up taking the calipers off to sand and paint. A seal kit can be fairly cheap (less than $30 in most cases), and is simple to do.

I was thinking of G2 brake caliper paint, heard a lot of good things about it. As long as I get all the rust off and proper prep prior to painting them, it should be fine for quite some time? I'll probably get the seals replaced as well as a safety measure, thanks!

look at my build thread, i sprayed mine with engine enamel and they came out looking great. i had the same rusting issue, just gave it a nice scrub down with a wire brush and brake cleaner and was good to go for spray. Masked and sprayed like 4 coats on each caliper.

I just get a spare set of caliper.. get a refurb kit and the Eastwood powdercoat kit.

Clean refurb and then swap. . If your car is older consider flushing and changing the brake lines as well.

The powder coating kit was really cheap ~80 when they go on sale.There are plenty of uses for it. It lasts much much longer than any paint.

As you said G2 all the way! I've used pretty much every "caliper paint kit" on the market and nothing lasts close to as long as G2. I re-did my calipers using it about 2 years ago, and it still looks like I did it yesterday. Stuff is amazing compared to any other caliper paint out there. One tip, don't mix it all at once, do little portions at a time and it will make applying it much easier cuz it hardens fairly quickly. But it looks amazing when done and lasts much longer than other kits available.
