Need help with timing chain k20 engines! my friend started pulling a code, camshaft position sensor k20 engine we took the valve cover off to check the timing chain does it look off? http://www.djzyx.com/timingchain.jpg |

1. Looks fine? 2. Umm...I think the sensor needs to be replaced? |
timing marks look correct, however the actual chain has reference marks for initial cam timing positions. That's what the k series diagram is trying to show. I had a 06 si come to me with a cam sensor code and it ended up being a failed timing chain tensioner, stretched chain and broken chain guide. The actual sensor itself was perfectly fine. What car is this in and how many kms are on the motor? Stock or modified? Posted via RS Mobile |
200,000km's on the engine bone stock i haven't changed the camshaft sensors yet, there are two of them is there anyway to check to see if the sensors are okay? i have a ohms meter |
could you describe what code number, and what exactly is the fault? have you checked simple things like low battery voltage? I am having a cam sensor code on my ford, and been through a new sensor, pig tail, checked resistance in wiring, new timing chain and guides (worn, but not out of alignment), and now everything points to an ecu error... |
even if you have the reference marks in the right locations don't you also have to make sure that these marks are in line while your crankshaft and camshafts are in the proper positions? on my car you must first rotate the crankshaft until a certain piston is at top dead center, then mak sure the reference marks are still in the correct positions. |
camshaft position sensor error code P0341 Yeah I need to line up the black chain marks according to another forum to see if those two dots line up with those two black chain links? ill try turning the cams tomorrow again to TDC i want to get this fixed asap |
going to use this guide instead K24/K20 timing chain alignment - K20A.org .:. The K Series Source . Honda / Acura K20a k24a Engine Forum |
ummm camshaft position sensor is on top of the valve cover....:okay: http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps7d127fec.jpg http://www.obd-codes.com/p0341 misaligned cams is not part of the "causes" if you read above. What I would do is clear the code and see if it returns first. If it returns right away it's bound to be a faulty sensor (note either the TDC sensor or the CAS) but if it was left for a long period of time and had a hard time starting causing the code, clearing the code is probably all you have to do. K20As basically never fail if you don't overrev them or boost them recklessly. |
Yes you are giving me symptoms of the sensor failing the code returns right away as soon as i turn the car on. This car hasn't been raced and its automatic! Thanks for all the feedback so far! |
If the code returns right away with the key on(not running), then it is not a mechanical/timing problem. You have to start looking at the sensor/wiring/ecu. |
Also the marks on the chain are only for 'initial' timing, or used for install after the chain has been taken off. The chain marks will eventually line back up with the cam+crank after many many revolutions depending on the amount of links vs teeth on the gears. |
Simplest way to check if your cam timing is correct or off is to roll the motor up to tdc. If memory serves me right there is a mark on the timing cover to correspond with the crank pulley. Go back up to the top of the motor and look at the back of the cams (with the v/c off) where the sensors are and you will see two alignment holes; one on either cam. Grab a center punch, dowel drill bit, something that will fit in those holes. If the cams are dialed in correctly you should be able to slide your drill bit or dowel into those two alignment holes and your cams should be timed aligned correctly and correspond to the mark on the crank. Good luck. |
replaced 2 camshaft sensors and replaced crankshaft sensor just for the hell of it they are not cheap either. still same code is coming up!!!!! Just a note I did change the ELD in the fuse box because that was not functioning properly. that error code is now gone. |
The sensors are hall sensors, you can test them usually with the diode mode of your meter (with your sensors still in the motor) or an oscilloscope. Have you check the connector to the ECU to see if there are any damage? |
im thinking its an ecu issue, but you still need to rule out connectors and wiring. whats the year, model, and status (rebuilt or clean)? In the case that its an ecu error, doesn't honda have longer emissions warranty? some manufacturers have like 10 years or something... good luck. |
im going to check the ecu connections and all connections see if anything is missing or possibly damaged for some reason |
Looks like my phase plates are out of alignment I went TDC on the crank than looked on the phase plates. I need to loosen the intake phase plate and move it back just a bit. Another guy on k20a.org is helping me out with this one. http://www.djzyx.com/timingchain2.JPG http://www.djzyx.com/timingchain3.JPG |
I'd double check the chain tension on the timing chain. there could be enough slack that its causing the cam, crank to be out of phase/ incorrectly timed. There is a service bulletin out on a tsx that I passed by, and if oil changes were extended, premature wear on chain can occur. Causing that code. You must measure chain tensioner end gap to be certain. I highly doubt that your ECU is pooped. Maybe some rodents ate thru some wiring? |
