$4500 claim on a bmw, is that alot?

i'm looking at buying a 2009 335i convertible and the only blemish is that its had a $4500 vandalism claim on the hood. never owned a bmw, would this be considered alot? i'm assuming, hood, front window and fender was replaced?? Not sure doesnt sound like 4500 to me though. any insight would be great, thanks

Shit's expensive. Sounds about right for a hood, windshield, fender and proper respray w/blending.

Though for a BMW, it's quite possible that cost covered just an OEM hood and respray.

I just had a 5000 claim on my mustang, some fucker ran a stop sign. Repaired small dent on hood, repaired bumper, replaced rebar and painted hood/fender/bumper.

jack3d 04-16-2013 04:32 PM

thanks

but because it's a convertible I would dig deeper on the condition/repair just in case. But it should be fine

Energy 04-16-2013 04:44 PM

$4500 is nothing on a bimmer... trust me.

donjalapeno 04-16-2013 04:48 PM

That $4500 dollar claim is a sign, that you should research just how expensive repairs and maintence are for a BMW before you jump behind the wheel of one. I have a buddy that bought a BMW 330i just because it was indeed a BMW and hes getting raped in the ass by repairs.

Nvasion 04-16-2013 04:52 PM

4500 isnt alot... paint hood, blend fenders, r&i...

bcrdukes 04-16-2013 05:02 PM

Sounds about right, but I'm surprised it wasn't more.

Then again, we don't know the nature and details of the damages/repairs required.

That's why it's always a good idea to invest a couple thousand into a set of good tools and do the work yourself.

donjalapeno 04-16-2013 07:47 PM

^ you can spend however much you want on tools, if your not mechanically inclined then you cant do shit.

Nabatron 04-16-2013 07:54 PM

no its not!:ahwow:

I'm on my 3rd BMW. No, $4500 isn't a lot. A regular accident can easily cost upwards of $10k.

Also, regular maintenance is more expensive than say a lower tiered brand. For example, an oil change alone cost $140-150ish at an independent BMW shop.

Yup.

7 to 8 litres of synthetic oil (sometimes more?) filter, oil light reset and labour right there.

in most cases, a vandalism claim doesn't have huge damages compared to an accident. In this case, maybe some punks key'd the car and it was repaired. If the job looks like it was well done, and unnoticeable, then it should be good to go.

full replacement of body panels, and especially lights are very expensive for european cars. My friend has a Mercedes 500SL like I do, and had a small front end accident. Bumper, hood, grille, lights etc is over $12000 damage. Heck the grill alone is $1400.

As others mentioned, yes, BMW's are expensive to repair (body or mechanically). I've learned the hard way too, but no regrets.

Ferra 04-17-2013 12:29 PM

some guy bump into my rear bumper a while ago..(<10km/h)
bodyshop said they can't repaint it, cost to replace the bumper alone was $3500+...(09 335i with M-sport bumper)

OEM parts and repair are ridiculously expensive....
e.g. you'd be looking at $5000+ of repair if someone just smash your windshield (1K+) and your two headlights (2K ea)

falcon 04-17-2013 12:42 PM

Not at all. My moms 2012 Civic had a rear ender and needed a new grill, hood, bumper, paint and labour. Cost was just a hair over $4000. And that's a Honda. Ask to see the report from the bodyshop (customers always get this). I believe you can also request it from ICBC? If I remember correctly.

Gotta start somewhere. 8 years ago I didn't even know what a camshaft was, let alone how to rebuild a motor properly and re/re transmission gears, diff, brakes, wiring etc. etc. A good set of tools + common sense and the internet = fix any problem with enough patience.

Cman333 04-17-2013 01:18 PM

My old bimmer claim hit 7k. Damage didn't look bad. Crack the corner of the bumper, headlight and bent the front quarter panel a little.

Headlight assembly was like 3k+. One side.

Harvey Specter 04-17-2013 02:16 PM

I had a nickle sized dent near my rear fender on my e92 and it cost ICBC $3000 to repair so no, $4500 is nothing but I would look at the repaired area carefully to see if the paint matches and all the work was done correctly.

i love how everyone just start to post their own experiences. Not gonna lie, do have pop corn + beer by my keyboard right now.

BMW head light one side = stock S13 240SX -___- how do you people afford such toys

skiiipi 04-17-2013 08:11 PM

Like many have said
4500 is minor
I hit a deer last summer at very low speeds
Cracked 1 headlight
Cracked bumper
And dented the hood and fender
10K claim.
