Live oysters
 

Hey guys, I found a thread already about where to by live oysters but it's 3 years old. I'm hoping to find out if there's any new places that have popped up recently. I'm talking about seafood shops that sell small to medium sized oysters, the same ones that sell at Boathouse, Rodneys, Oyster, etc.

Of course everyone knows of The Lobsterman on Granville Island. There's 7 Seas up on 4th and Whole Foods on Cambie. Any idea what the price range is for these places?

Does Albion Fisheries sell at wholesale prices to the public?

I also read of Taylor Shellfish Farms just south of Bellingham.

Anywhere else locally or just across the border that I've missed?

I buy mine from Whole Foods on Cambie. They typically have up to 5 different types ranging from $0.75 - $1.175 or so and prices are on par with LobsterMan. The biggest difference for me was Whole Foods will shuck them for free while LobsterMan won't shuck them at all.

It isn't a big deal for some but I prefer to just get them shucked.

Buck a shuck at Boat House White Rock from 4-6PM... might be weekdays only.. cot damn I wanna go right now :drool

Do they do a good job at shucking the oysters?

Ebisu always has Live oysters for fresh, as well as the newly opened Kamei Baru carries about 7 different kind of oysters! Happy Hour will be open soon!

I'm not even what my friends would call and oyster person, I like them, a lot, but I don't got nuts for them.
But I think if you get them shucked them take them home, you're losing that oyster liquor. Does Whole Foods shuck them and just put the meat in a little tub for you?
That would be pretty sweet if I had money.
I don't have the money to spend to get nice oysters shucked for chowder.
Best I would could hope for is my aunt doing chiu chow oyster pancakes.


Also, I like the small ones the best. Kumamotos and Miyagi are probably my favs. I get mine from Seafood City on Granville Island.
Done a couple oyster nights, have yet to have a single sub-par oyster.

Hey you don't need a wad of money to eat oysters, you can easily get them on sale at whole foods for like .69 for some kusshi or fanny bay's. You don't need to eat alot to be happy!

Whole-foods PLUS it is convenient if you want to buy other grocery items too.

Another restaurant a few doors down had buck a shuck advertised.. didn't catch the name but will check it out.

They're shucked on the half shell and sit over a bed of ice.

Wha? You eat them there?

What CH28 said. Still on the half shell my man so don't worry, the juice is still there. Enjoy!

He's saying if their shucked on the half shell, on the drive home your going to spill the juices. He'd rather them shuck them and put them in a container and pour the juices in there as well.

From personal experience I have yet to lose any juice from my drive home so unless your route goes through many bumps, sharp turns, and or if you drive like an idiot then it shouldn't be a problem.

Was at Whole Foods on Cambie and Broadway. Oysters are shucked for free. Fanny Bay oysters $0.99 each or one dozen for $9.99. Kusshi and Kumamoto are $1.49 each. There were other oysters too, between $0.99 to $1.49. Overall much cheaper than restaurant prices. Quality is there.

I've never did this before and only bought oysters at lobster man and whole foods, but is it ok to eat raw oysters bought from places like T&T and superstore?

Possibly, but I would not chance it.


If they name the type of oysters, then yes, it's probably ok.
But if some place just has a tray that says "oysters", I would personally consider them to be cooking oysters only.

there was a crawfish place in richmond which now is now oyster bar of some type.
1 dollar duing happy hour, but i doubt there's anyone there
