Tire review thread!!

Hello! I wasn't able to find a tire review thread in any of the RS forums.... so, lets start here!

For those of you who actually care about tires, not just for the sake cause this set is cheaper than the other... all your input will be greatly appreciated and valued! so please chime in.
Whether you have experience with certain tire, (rant/praise) do it here!

I think most people care about is,
Ride comfort
Road noise
Tread life

Dry traction
Wet traction

Reason why i think we need one of these threads cz I think its safe to say most of the reviews given on the inter web is all Bullshit...

Ill start off first!
Falken FK452.. good? bad?
looking into purchasing a set very, very soon

Thread would probably be best served being in the wheel/tire/suspension forum. Just sayin'.

No experience with the Falkens but here's my review on a tire I've own three separate sets of:

Toyo Proxes4

For the budget conscience buyer, the Proxes4 are a good buy. They're relatively cheap compared to most of its competition. In the dry they're pretty impressive. No, they're no R compound tire but you can settle into a corner at speed and feel confident that they wont give out. And when they finally do let go, you get a nice little bit of notice before they go. For the first 10,000km's, they're pretty good at heavy rain and even a bit of snow. They may be M+S rated but I wouldn't use them in anything more than an inch or so of snow. And even then they still slip. But as a fair weather tire, you'd be hardpressed to find a better tire for the price. The one big downside, however, is that they do tend to wear out rather quickly, even with a proper alignment. On a car running negative camber, you need to rotate them on a monthly basis. I noticed by around 20,000km's of summer driving they're close to the wear marks.

Kumho 4x ku22

225/40/18 on 18*8 and 18*9.5

Ride Comfort
10/10
Ride is smooth its similar to touring tires

Road nose
9/10
Really quiet tires even on the highway comparing to dws is basiclly the same

Thread life
n/a
Just got them couple months ago

Dry Traction
8/10
altho its a all season dry traction is pretty good and it grips well in corner, when reaching the limit it howls like a bitch before letting go

Wet Traction
9/10
surprising good in the wet taking turns at the same rate as dry without any problems

I had a set of dws on my previous car and these are cheaper and just as good, so far really happy with these

I don't have any experience with Falken FK452, but IIRC, it is quite an old tire -- at least 5 or 6 years old, if not older. Since there is now a FK453 model, I think it is reasonable to assume that the FK453 is an update to the FK452? The thing with tires is, new models are almost always universally better than the old model they replace. Depending on what size you are looking for, it might be worth your while to consider the Continental DW instead. The DW is an extremely, extremely capable tire that sells for a very attractive price. The only down side is its softer sidewall and the slightly rubbery steering feel / delayed turn-in that you get.

Hankook Ventus EVO V12 (rated as a all-season performance tire)
255/35 on 9.5 and 285/30 on 10.5

all around for me they are 10/10, based on price and dry traction, and that they do just fine in rain as well.

Ride comfort / road noise - very smooth ride feel and they seem to be pretty quiet at cruising
Tread life - put about 6000km on them so far, and abused the rear's quite a bit.. almost look like new still
Dry traction - even with a 30 series rear tire the traction is very good, hard to break them loose unless you have a lot of power.
Wet traction - even in heavy rain they've done just fine even when taking turns quite hard

BF Goodrich G Force Supersport A/S

pros: good snow, rain, dry tractions, pretty cheap too

Can anyone recommend me a 305/35 or 40/18 that's not a drag radial?

I never quite get about tires reviews.. unless you are swapping sets of tires back to back, it is very hard to judge noise and ride comfort objectively. Tire wear is a maybe but there are other things at work eg suspension components (that has aged from a previous set of tires) and alignment that can accelerate wear. Unless you have a detailed log of your driving (GPS and weather conditions) wet and dry traction data are a iffy too, especially someone might be driving an SUV vs a sedan.

Honestly I think the differences within tires of the same MSRP range and wear ratings are minimal, just go with the newest formulation, best deal and warranty (pretty much means the States, and more expensive tires are better deals there) you can afford and spend the time and effort on maintenance and honing your driving skills.

^ any kind of review should be taken with a grain of salt, person A rate tire 1 10/10 in every category where as person B may rate tire 1 2/10. person A could be comparing his new set of max performance summers and find them omgwtfbbq awesome to his old shitty as oem all seasons, while person b's been using max performance summers. there is no set standard to benchmark tires because everyone's driving style is different n it all depends on what tires they're previously using. its very subjective

I loved my fk452. Great grip, good tread life.
Hated my 512s. No grip, no tread life.
Liked my Toyo t1r, but ate through the tires VERY FAST
Pirelli pzero nero lasted FOREVER, and grip was good, but not great wet or dry.
Nitto neo gens currently have good grip, great price, good in the wet, unsure of tread life
Federal ss595 were toast in 4000kms on my e30. Tons of camber but the toe was fine.
falken 912 are the worst tires I've ever had. No grip in the dry or wet.
I dont notice road noise really, but I think all were probably pretty bad. Ride comfort is non existent because all were either 35 or 40 series on bottomed out coils.

There is almost little to no difference between the 512s and 912s LOL!

Were these using the old or new compound? Mine lasted a bit but they were on the old compound (circa 2003/4'ish.)

I had them in 2008 probably, so not totally sure. My buddy also ran them around that time and ate through them pretty fast. I liked the 512s more than the 912s, because they let me fit lower offset wheels due to running narrow, and having a weird sidewall shape., but other than that, they are equally shitty to drive on.

Yes there is. If you think the 512s are bad, the 912s are worse. I replaced the 512s for the 912s

Looks like you had the Toyo T1R with the new compound. The older compound was excellent. Long lasting tread life, excellent dry and wet grip. Ride quality was pretty harsh, not very comfortable overall but a great summer tire.

I have them on my TL-S.. They are basic tires and not very confidence inspiring when driven hard around corners - fairly soft sidewall. Good enough for daily driver both in wet/dry conditions. I have not tried them in snow as I have dedicated winter tires already. Grip is very good though and I may experiment with them in light snow.

Tread life is amazing ... Could probably go near 100,000km on a set. ( considering I have this set on 6 months a year and my winters for other 6 )

Price is very good but as above, if u just need decent tires to get around, these do very well.

Very aggressive tread pattern is also nice.
