The Sparknotes version is this. The Chinese government slaps stiff import taxes on foreign-made cars, and equally stiff taxes on luxury goods. The post-Cultural Revolution phenomenon of conspicuousness to the point of tackiness means that no Chinese would want to be seen with an older Quattroporte, a car that costs less than $45k in Canada. They want the 2013 Quattroporte GT-S with all the options, to be seen in. That's why it costs £275k. (A new S500 costs 2.1 million RMB (just over $350k) which is triple the cost of the equivalent in Canada (the S550).

By the way it's the same in all of Asia, steep taxes to protect local industries or encourage public transport. The most extreme example: In Singapore a Honda Accord costs S$150k. But Singapore's subway is amazing, it blows Skytrain out of the goddamn water.

On a side note: Because China is still a poor country (the average factory worker in Beijing or Shanghai makes less than $300 a month), someone with a new model luxury vehicle is really, really, really, REALLY fucking rich. And they will pay in cash for these cars, with bags full of yuan in some cases. These mega-ballers are more often than not connected to the Communist Party, either they own businesses that are in favour with the CCP or they are corrupt politicians themselves. They will send their kids abroad to study, I have heard anecdotes of high school kids getting their own house in Shaughnessey or Dunbar, all paid in cash by their parents. Many are good people I'm sure, but some are spoiled rotten ("My father is Li Gang", the Highway 99 street racers, the 599 GTO crash in Singapore).

Just to show you how fast China's economy is growing, 400,000 Audis were sold in China and HK in 2012, compared to 140,000 in the US.
What the fuck is sparknotes?

It's the new Coles Notes. Guess "spark" was more catchy to the instant gratification generation.

Lets be honest. Mr. Wang just wants the new S class but cant afford to tell his wife he's ridding the maserati, so he grabs a bunch of people and smashes it.

More like 200+% tax.

My friend in Gongzhou drives a CL63 here, has some sort of puny econo Nissan in China. Both bought new.

The friggin' nissan was like $50+k he said. Something worth about $15k here.

Mind you this was a couple years ago, who knows if it's gone up or down now.

Actually, the sons and daughters of ridiculously rich Mainlanders/HKers will buy supercars here, and sell them in Asia for a profit. A 458 costs about $300k here and in China/HK it is $700k.

I know people who will shop around for months for something like an M3 or an S4, but these guys will drop $200,000 on an SLS or $2 million on a Dunbar home as if it was pop or a candy bar. And in cash, no less. The amount of wealth in Asia is insane.

Here's an article I found about Chinese pricing of foreign goods: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...260265834.html

that's pretty much what the mentality is.. that the cars seem like their 50% off here LOL

my uncle has the new LS and 7 series in China and that's probably around 500k just for two cars because of all the taxes/duties/etc whereas you could get both cars here for less than 250k.

What's the import tax on a 458 from Canada to China?

The girlfriend just bought an E-Class in HK for over 230k+ CAD, could've bought two of them here and still have change left over. No clue what the tax is in HK but it's fucking expensive!

Probably more than I'll make in several lifetimes.

Now my question: How did you manage to bag a rich HK girl who isn't a fucking golddigger? I hate dating in Vancouver sometimes.
