Head unit acting flaky, hard-resetting. Wiring issue or on it's last legs?

I haven't gotten a chance to pull it out to check the wiring, but just wondering if it is likely that or the HU is about to conk out.

Basically it randomly shuts down (not even over bumps or anything; just sitting still it would shut down). Sometimes it would take a few seconds to a minute or two before it turns back on again. Sometimes it would start back up right away. The odd thing is when it is shut down, the power and eject buttons are still lit but the rest of the display is dead.

When it first happened it would retain my settings, but the past week it has done a full on factory reset.

Would a short in the wiring cause this or is it on its last legs?

Sounds like bad ground.

I would check power and ground to be safe.

Shorts in wiring can definitely cause permanent damage. That's why its not recommended to "hack" it in. Either solder and heatshrink or butt connect the connections.

That sounds like a dying deck to me, especially the intermittently changing symptoms. Sorry :fuuuuu:
