From experiences in Asia, every time someone asks me where I'm from and I tell them that I'm Canadian, they will ask me again where I'm really from. Saying Hong-Kong/Canadian just simplifies everything.

Refer to video.

I got asked that so many times here in Australia... OMG your english is so good, and you have an American accent? where are you from?

me: Canada
Really, that explains the accent, but where are you from?

Once had this guy with a thick Irish accent talking to my friends. He asks one of my friends,
"Where are you from?"
"Vancouver"
"No where are you really from"
"Oh you mean my ancestors? From China"
His cousin with a Canadian accent all frustrated says "Same thing!"
So my friend asks him "Then where are you from?"

:banghead:
"Burnaby"

StylinRed 06-22-2013 06:13 AM

i've gotten asked that too even though i look totally white; chick asked me "where are you from?" i told her vancouver (i was in coq at the time) then she's like "no, where do you hail from?" and im like "Oh, Canada" she gets super frustrated and asks where my parents are from and i'm like "Canada" then her dad tells her to "just forget it" :lol

lowside67 06-22-2013 06:19 AM

A young person actually asked you "Where do you hail from?" /disbelieve

SkinnyPupp 06-22-2013 06:25 AM

At the same time, you guys bloody well know what they mean... just that it's too politically incorrect to ask someone what race they are.

i actually had no clue because no one ever suspects me of being mixed it dawned on me when i answered where my parents were from but by then it was too late and i didnt want to backtrack since the convo immediately led elsewhere

trancehead 06-22-2013 10:12 AM

1/2 the time it's good intentions but half the time it's a trap :p
"You've never even been to japan why would you say you're from there? Why don't you think of yourself as a Canadian?"
And then the perpetual foreigner thing is your fault. Maybe things have changed but that's the way I've played the game the last two decades

urrh 06-23-2013 11:35 AM

i always tell people i'm canadian too
i don't understand why that isn't good enough... as if canada doesn't have a culture
i don't go by ancestors either because, if you go back far enough, everyone's african

Hongers are very xenophobic and hypocritical. HK is based on finance, and that money comes from mainland. People in HK opened up factories and gained wealth due to the mainland yet despise them as they feel mainlanders are lower class. Sad really, as divided HK will not progress.

this. I have the same feeling about hong kong after spending considerable amount of time living there passing off as a local (i'm born in mainland spent a childhood in china before moving to canada). honger are extremely racist and it doesn't help that most of them are very easily manipulate by the media. Mostly they are haters in general, hate the people that are poorer than them and hate the people that are richer than them.

I've had that conversation before.

"So what are you? Chinese?"

"Canadian."

"Yeah but originally from China, right?"

"No, I was born in Vancouver."

There's really nothing Chinese about me other than the way I look.

The way I think about it is, if China ever declared war on Canada, I'd be on Canada's side without even thinking about it.

they only want to go as far back as how your looks came to be.

otherwise everyone should just answer "earth". like no shittttttt.

when people ask where you're from, they want to know why you look the way you do. they don't care what other culture you've assimilated. they're directing the questions to your genes.

really people should just ask "what's your racial background?"... but socially: "where are you from?" is accepted as the same question.

they're asking not what passports you hold, but if you were to be dug up and inspected at the genetic molecular level, what race you'd be labelled as.

Gululu, you might not want to spread that image around (or at least blank out the genital area). It might constitute child pornography.

SkinnyPupp 07-01-2013 04:24 AM

Someone posts a picture of a girl pissing in the street, and all RS can think of is child porn :fulloffuck:

In this day and age, you can never be too cautious especially when there is a wide audience on an Internet forum. I also just wrote a paper on freedom of expression and child pornography (see section 163 of the Criminal Code)

So you are expressing genuine concern rather than trolling?

What part of my statement here would make you think I was trolling? or are you alluding to some of my other posts?
