From experiences in Asia, every time someone asks me where I'm from and I tell them that I'm Canadian, they will ask me again where I'm really from. Saying Hong-Kong/Canadian just simplifies everything.

Once had this guy with a thick Irish accent talking to my friends. He asks one of my friends,
"Where are you from?"

i've gotten asked that too even though i look totally white; chick asked me "where are you from?" i told her vancouver (i was in coq at the time) then she's like "no, where do you hail from?" and im like "Oh, Canada" she gets super frustrated and asks where my parents are from and i'm like "Canada" then her dad tells her to "just forget it"

when people ask where you're from, they want to know why you look the way you do. they don't care what other culture you've assimilated. they're directing the questions to your genes.
really people should just ask "what's your racial background?"... but socially: "where are you from?" is accepted as the same question.
they're asking not what passports you hold, but if you were to be dug up and inspected at the genetic molecular level, what race you'd be labelled as.

In this day and age, you can never be too cautious especially when there is a wide audience on an Internet forum. I also just wrote a paper on freedom of expression and child pornography (see section 163 of the Criminal Code)
